SKYLIGHT AND VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,892, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed January 11, 1896. Serial No. 575,169. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIRK LANDSTRA, a citizen of the U nited States, residing at Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of -New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skylights and Ventilators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in skylights and ventilators for roofs of dwelling-houses and other buildings.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and useful ventilator which is designed to be made in diamond, round, oval or elliptical form, and by this construction the water is more readily thrown off than is now the case where square ventilators are used.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional view of my improved ventilator. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the operating bar or handle. Fig. shows the plate in details. Fig. 4. represents a detail view of a portion of the reticulated frame, showing the notch therein and its cam and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of my device, show ing the cover raised.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the frame, preferably of galvanized iron, of my improved ventilator which is provided with a surrounding flange a, which is adapted to be secured to the roof of a building and covered by shingles, slate or tin roofing. The surrounding walls I) of the frame A stand a suitable distance above the roof of the building and are provided near their upper portions with a surro unding flange c, the walls continuing above the flange to form an extension (Z, for a purpose presently explained.
B indicates the cover of the frame, which is constructed of the same material as the frame A, having a double plate-glass mounted therein. This cover is hinged to the side walls of the frame, as shown, and is provided with a downwardlyinclined flange e, which extends around the periphery of said cover, the flange having a shoulder c, which fits snugly against the extension cl, whereby water or other foreign substances are excluded.
D denotes the operating bar or handle pivoted to the under side of the frame of the cover, the same being constructed in two parts or sections, and each section hinged to one another, and the same is provided with a series of notches Zin one of its edges. The hinge -joint connecting the sections of the handle permits the lower section to be turned upward and out of the way when not in use.
To the under portion of the frame A is secured a plate f, having an opening g therein through which the handle or bar D passes.
Secured to the plate and engaging the handlebar is a sprin g g, which is in contact with the unnotched edge of the operating-bar. The inner edge of this plate is designed to engage any desired notch in the handle by the press ure of the spring against the back edge of the handle-bar aforesaid, and when thus engaged the cover of the ventilator maybe held in any raised position desired.
To the inner face of the surrounding wall of the frame A is hinged a galvanized frame D, having secured thereto a reticulated or woven-Wire frame :0, which excludes flies, mosquitoes and the like from the building when the ventilator is open. This frame D is provided with a notch i in its edge that passes over the plate f and is held in place by a cam t" ,pivoted near the edge of the frame D, as shown.
The operation of my device is as follows: The handle being arranged in an inclined position and is forced in the direction of the hinged portion of the cover and against the spring which releases the upper notch of said handlebar from engagement with the plate, thence said bar is forced upward, raising the cover until the desired notch in said bar engages the edge of the plate and is held in engagement by the pressure of the spring against the rear edge of said handle-bar. To lower or close the cover of the ventilator, the operator forces the bar against the spring, which releases said bar from the inner edge of the plate, and by drawing down on the handle the cover may be lowered or entirely closed.
It will thus be seen from the above description and by reference to the annexed drawings that I construct a skylight or ventilator which can be used in a horizontal, inclined or a vertical position on abuilding, and when closed it is self-locking and cannot be opened from the outside of the building, and when the same is opened by combining the fiy-screen therewith all insects are excluded at the same time air is admitted, and a device as herein described is durable, ornamental and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a Ventilator the combination with the frame A, having a surrounding lower and upper flange, a lip extending above the upper flange, a cover hinged to said frame, provided with a surrounding flange of an operatinghandle pivoted to said cover, a plate secured to said frame having a central opening, a spring secured to said plate, the handle-bar. having the notches and a Woven-Wire frame hinged to the main frame, having the notch and cam, all substantially as described.
