IMPROVED EAVE-TROUGH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,595, dated June 19, 1866.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J. P. ABBOTT, ot' Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanging Eave-Troughs; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full and complete description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing's, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the cave-trough. Fig. 2 is a top view of the saine.

The nature of my improvement -relates to the inode of han gin g cave-troughs, either upon the cornice or roof, by which the gutter is securely held to the building and readily adjusted to the desired pitch with ease and facility, as hereinafter set forth.

A, Fig. 1, is an arm, which is fastened to the roof, or it may consist of a screw, which can be screwed into the cornice. C D are lips containing slots. B is a standard with notches o1' teeth B', into which the lips C D lit, and are fastened by a key, F, passing` back of the standard and between it and the arm, as seen in Fig. 1. E lis a cross-tree connected with the standard. G is a strap passing around the gutter H. The end of this strap has a slot, into which the rear end of the cross-tree passes and is then bent'over, forming a hook, thus holding it securely. The strap then passes under the gutter and over the bead in front, where a wire, which is soldered to the crosst-ree, is hooked into it and bent back, thus securing it firmly. ce is a lip or projection ofthe cross-tree, on the under side, thus forming a brace, which prevents the trough being crushed should a ladder or any other article be placed against it. d el, Fig. 2, are holes in the arm, by which it may be nailed or screwed to the roof.

In adjusting this eave-trough to the roof of a building, in order to give it the proper inclination for carrying ott' the water readily, a line can be drawn from one corner of the eaves to the other of the inclination required, to which the trough can be adjusted by raising or lowering the standard B in the slotted lips C D of the arm A. As many 'ot' these standards can be used as desired to give the proper strength and support to the eave-trough.

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The adjustable arm A, notched standard B, slotted lips G D, and key F, in combination with the cross-tree E, strap G, and glitter H, as and for the purpose set forth.
