IMPRovED lcs-CREEPER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,584, dated June l2, 1866.

To all whom t may concern:

Beitknown that I, AUGUSTUS S. HADAWAY, ot' Plymouth, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and lmproved Ice-Creeper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar device for fastening an ice-creeper to the heel of a boot or shoe.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use.

ln the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the creeper as attached to the heel of a boot. Fig. 2 is a section of a boot-heel and creeper. Fig. 3 is an elevation ot a boot-heel and the creeper, showing the device for securing the creeper to the heel. Fig. 4 is an elevation ofthe creeper detached from the heel.

A represents the heel ofa boot or shoe; B, the plate ot' the creeper, made ot' any suitable material, said plate being turned up in front ofthe heel, termina-ting in the points d d, and holding underneath the spikes C O C. F is a wire fastened to the front plate of the creeper, and, passing around the heel, is connected with the toggle-lever L. This lever is connected, by the staple s, which acts as a fulcrum, to the small plate D, the upper edge of which is bent over, as shown at a, so as to catch on the top of the heel.

In using this creeper the lever L is turned down, as shown in Fig. 4, the plate B is placed on the heel, the points d d entering the leather infront, and the small plate Dis placed on the back ofthe heel, the bent edge n catching between the upper-leather and sole; then by turningI up the lever L the wire F draws the front ofthe plate B against the front ofthe heel and presses the points d d into the leather, thus fastening the creeper securely to the heel. It is only necessary to turn down the lever L, which relieves the strain on the wire F, and the creeper can be easily removed.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

The combination ot' the wire F, the togglelever L, and the plate D, all for the purpose set forth, and substantially as specified.
