CLAMPING DEVICE FOR PAPER BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersjPatent No. 555,845, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILBUR S. BLANOHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Laekawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a machine for securing ends in paper boxes of different sizes and clamping the parts while they are being secured in position by paste or glue, and also to the product produced thereby; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and very efficient machine for producing paper boxes of that type which have their bottom and sides formed of one piece and which have ends inserted in and secured between the bottom and sides, said machine accommodating itself to the side of a box along its whole length with an equal pressure without in any wise injuring the same; and a further object of the invention is the production of the box above mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my improved clamping device applied to a work-table or other suitable support. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section through the device. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 4 represents the pivoted adj Listing-block in diiferent lengths.
A in the drawings represents a suitable working table or bench. Along the rear upper edge of the table is secured a vertical strip or bead a and along one of its top side edges a vertical strip or bead a. The strip a is provided with a series of adj listing-holes a and another strip a may be secured on top of the table or bench slightly in front of the strip a, in which a supporting-rail a may be secured and against which and the strip a the box being formedmay rest.
13 represents a lever which is pivoted at its rear end in any one of the adjusting-holes a in the strip or according to the depth of the box which it is desired to clamp. The lever B is provided with a series of adjusting-holes b.
0 represents an accommodating clampblock which is pivoted to the under side of the lever B through one of the holes I), and is of a greater width than the lever, and is pivoted so as to extend beyond the inner edge of the lever, and has its rear end beveled at 0, so that when the lever is moved to the right to its full extent the beveled end of the block will come flush with and be stopped from further movement by the bead or strip a By constructing the block 0 as described its rear inner edge will first strike the side of the box being pasted, and as the lever is continued to be forced inward it will accommodate itself to the side of the box along its entire depth with an equal pressure without mashing the box at any point, and especially at its lower rear corner. This would not be the case if the accommodating block C was not provided and constructed to extend beyond the inner edge of the lever B. The block C may also be provided with a plurality of holes 0, through any one of which the bolt or screw 1) may be passed, so that the block can be moved in or out to suit boxes of different depths. As shown in Fig. 4, the clampingblocks will be made of different lengths for a similar purpose. By providing a large number of adjusting-holes a in the strip or bead a different-sized boxes, say from two inches to thirty inches wide and fifteen inches deep, can be made.
D represents a front clamp, which consists of a lever (Z, which is vertically pivoted to the front edge of the table or bench in any suitable manner. In the drawings I have shown a bifurcated rod or bar 01 secured to the under side of the table and extending a short distance beyond the front edge of the same, in which the lever cl is pivoted in a vertical manner. d represents a removable horizontally-sliding clamping-bl0ck which is provided with a vertical passage (i through which the upper end of the lever 01 is passed. By drawing the lower end of the lever outward the clamping-block d will be forced inward against a forming-block E, placed within the sides and end of the boxes being formed, and securely clamp the same.
The block E may be provided with a suitable aperture 6 or a suitable handle to assist in removing it from the box when the levers B and cl have been withdrawn.
The front clamping device D is not obsolutely necessary and may be dispensed with, though it is sometimes found convenient in combination with the side clamping device. The rail a forms a support for the back of the box while the ends are being secured in position.
The operation of the machine when the front clamp is employed is as follows: After the parts of the box have been assembled as shown in the drawings, the levers B and dare operated and the parts firmly clamped until they have sufficiently adhered, when the clamping-blocks are withdrawn and the operation repeated at the other end of the box.
The box produced consists of a single piece of material bent to form the sides and bottom of the box and end pieces having three of their edges bent up to form fastening-flaps, said ends being inserted within the sides and bottom of the box and secured to the same by being pasted along the flaps of the ends.
WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A machine for clamping a paper box while being manufactured, which comprises in its construction a horizontally-movable lever pivoted at its rear end, an approximately long accommodating block pivoted to the under side of said lever parallel therewith intermediate the fulcrum of the lever and where the power is applied; said block extending beyond the inner edge of the lever along the length of the same, and which is adapted to be brought up to the side of a box and clamp the same along its entire depth with an equal pressure, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a working table or support, provided with adj usting-holes, a lever pivoted at its rear end in one of said holes and also provided with adj usting-holes, and a self-adj usting side clamp pivoted in one of the holes in said lever, substantially as described.
8. A device for clamping a paper box while being manufactured which comprises in its construction a horizontally-arranged lever pivoted at its rear end, a clamping-block pivoted to the lever at a suitable point on its length and extending beyond the inner edge of the lever, whereby it can be brought in contact with the side of the box along its entire depth with an equal pressure, and adj usting-holes in the lever, substantially as described.
4. A device for clamping a paper box while being manufactured which comprises in its construction a horizontally-pivoted lever, a clamping-block having a beveled rear edge and pivoted to the lever at a suitable point and projecting beyond the inner edge of the lever, and a stop, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a device for clamping a paper box while being manufactured, the combination with a self-adjusting side clamp, of a forming-block inserted within the box and a front clamp, substantially as described.
6. In combination with a work-table having a horizontal top surfaceand a holding-strip, a machine for clamping the side of a paper box while being manufactured, which comprises in its construction a horizontally-movable lever pivoted at its rear end and free the rest of its length, a comparatively long broad accommodating block pivoted to the under side of said lever and which extends beyond the inner edge of the same along the length of the lever and which is adapted to be brought up to the side of a box and clamp the same along its entire depth at right angles to the top of the work-table with an equal pressure without injuring the same, substantially as described.
