SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,564, dated February 11, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT LEE YEAGER, of Burnham, county of Howell, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce what may be called a strain-equalizing device, whereby when the resistance offered to the share has reached a maximum predetermined limit the plowshare will automatically yield and free itself from the resisting object, thereby insuring against injury to the mechanism through excessive strain.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of my plow with its parts in their normal position. Fig. II is a View of the same when the stump-deiiector is directly actuated. Fig. III is a similar view showing the position of the parts in the complete relieving position. Fig. IV is a rear elevation of the subject-matter shown in Fig. I. Fig. Vis a top plan view thereof. Fig. VI is a bottom plan View thereof.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, l indicates a plow-beam, which is preferably constructed of metal somewhat after the manner of the ordinary plow, but which has a rearwardly-deflected leg 2, that is preferably provided on its extremity with an eyelet 3, in which a guide-bolt 4 may, if desired, be employed.
5 indicates the post or post-frame proper, which consists preferably of two flat pieces of metal, united to constitute, in eect, a single piece, that are pivoted, as by a bolt 6, passing through them and the beam-leg 2, to the beam.
To the lower end of the post is pivoted a share plate or frame 7, as indicated at 8. The share or blade 9, of any suitable form, is secured by any usual means to the face of the share-plate and is carried and reinforced by it.

l5 indicates adraft-lever, which preferably consists of two pieces, pivoted, as by a bolt 16, to the opposite sides of the forward end of the beam. A bolt 17 unites them pivotally to the intermediately-located auxiliary beam 13.
1S indicates a clevis secured to the lower end of the draft-lever, by which motive power is attached, as in the ordinary manner, to the plow.
The foregoing elements present my invention in its simplest form. If in that form the plow were employed in practice, ordinary strain upon the share would cause it to advance in the usual manner thro ugh the ground, cutting the usual furrow. If, however, the point of the share should strike a too heavy obstruction-as, for instance, a large stone or root-the share-plate would tilt upon its pivot 8 against the draft power communicated to the plow Vthrough the clevis 18 and would assume the oblique position shown in Fig. III of the drawings, in which position all strain would be relieved and the share would slip out of the earth. In order, however, that the share and share-plate may not be called upon to do all the work of equalizing the strain between the draft power and the resistance presented against the blade, I prefer to employ what may be called stump-deiiecting mechanism,`which consists of a stump-deflector 20, that is pivotally supported, as by a bolt, ind icated at 2l, from hinged deflector-supporting levers 22 and 23, one of which is pivotally united by the bolt 16 to the forward end of the beam, and the other, in like manner, by the bolt 14 to the hinged joint that unites the auxiliary beam to the post. A radial guidearm 25, pivotally secured, as by a bolt 26, near the lower extremity of the deflector,is pivoted, as by a bolt 27, to the beam I, and, under strain upon the end of the delector, causes the deector tomove from the almost perpendicular normal position shown in Fig. I of the drawings to the deflecting position indicated in Fig. II of the drawings. At the same time,
by the leverage afforded by the deflector-lever '22, the auxiliary beam and the post Y will be IOO drawn toward the beam l and thereby tilt the share-plate and share precisely in the same manner as a resistance upon the point of the share Would tilt them, until, should the resistance against the deflector continue, the deflector and the share will be brought to the positions illustrated in Fig. III of the drawings, in which the surface of the share and the edge of the delector are in substantial alignment. Consequently, When the stump, for instance, which actuates the deflector strikes the share the share slips over it Without any resistance Whatever and without Strain.
I desire, also, in addition to the deflecting mechanism above described, to employ automatic reactionary mechanism for normally holding the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. I of the drawings and for restoring them to that position after each deective actuation imparted to the deflector or the share. For this purpose I prefer to employ a suitably-located spring 28. rlhe deectorsupporting levers 22 and 23 constitute, in effeet, a toggle-joint; and in order to utilize the great power thereof in the reactionary feature of my invention I prefer to locate the spring as near as possible to that joint and to secure one end, as indicated at 29, to the auxiliary beam and the other end to a point 30, located in close proximity to the bolt 2l.
It will be perceived from the foregoing description that the degree of resistance necessary to cause the tilting of the share is determinable by the amount of leverage afforded through the beam and post, auxiliary beam, and draft-levers With respect to their relative arrangements. I therefore prefer to provide in the post, the auxiliary beam, the draft-lever, and the deflector-supporting lever 23 a plurality of bolt-holes 3l, so graduated, as by the adjustment of the bolts 6, I4, and 17', to permit of some considerable variation between the diiferent degrees of strain necessary to deflect the share, and thereby to adapt it for use in different varieties of soil.
That I claim is- I. In a plow, the combination With a beam and tilting share thereon, of a draft-lever movable independent of the beam, and a system of levers operatively connecting the tilting share and the draft-lever, substantially as specified.
2. In a plow, the combination with a beam and tilting share thereon, of a draft-lever movable independent of the beam, a system of levers operatively connecting the tilting share and draft-lever, and reactionary mechanism adapted to yieldingly maintain the share in its normal position, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a plow-beam and tilting share thereon, and a draft-lever movable independent of the beam, a system of levers operatively connecting the share and the draft-lever, and mechanism for regulating the leverage Vof the levers, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a plow-beam and post pivoted thereto, of a tilting share carried on the post and operatively connected with the end of the beam, a draft-lever pivoted to the end of the beam, and an auxiliary beam pivoted to the upper end of the post and the draft-lever, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination With a plow-beam, post pivoted thereto and tilting share carried on the post, and operatively connected With the beam, of a draft-lever pivoted to the forward extremity of the beam, an auxiliary beam pivoted to the post and the draft-lever, togglejoint levers pivoted to the extremity of the beam and to the joint of the auxiliary beam and the post, and a spring secured to the auxiliary beam and to one of the toggle-joint levers near their joint, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a plow-beam and tilting share thereon, and a draft-lever movable independent of the beam, a system of levers operatively connecting the share and the draft-lever, mechanism for regulating the leverage of the levers, and reactionary mechanism adapted to yieldingly retain the share in its normal position, substantially as specified.
7. 'Ihe combination with a plow-beam, deiiecting-share and system of levers connected therewith, of a defiector operatively connected With the levers and with the beam, in advance of the share, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination With a plow-beam and post pivoted thereto, of a plowshare pivoted to the post and operatively connected With the beam, a draft-lever and auxiliary beam pivotally united to each other and to the beam and post, respectively, pivotally-united deflector-supporting levers pivoted to the beam and the joint of the post and the auxiliary beam,vrespectively, a deector pivotally supported by the levers in advance of the share, and a radial guide-arm pivoted to the beam and to the deiector, substantially as set forth.
9. 'Ihe combination with a plow-beam, post and share pivotally united to the post, and operatively connected With the beam, of a draft-lever and auxiliary beam, a deflector, toggle-joint levers pivotally united to the same and to each other, respectively, and having their opposite ends pivotally secured to the beam and to the joint of the post and the auxiliary beam, and a radial guide-arm pivoted to the end of the deiiector and the beam, substantially as set forth.
