Be it known that I, JACOB SCHWARZ, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in \Vaistbands for Trousers and other Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to waistbands, and is more particularly adapted for use on trousers.

TO The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and efficientwaistband of that character wherein either elastic or inelastic buttonloops may be employed,as desired, and to provide means for readily connecting the r 5 button-loops to and-disconnecting them from the waistband in order to replace the loops which may have become worn.

To these ends my invention consists in a waistband of the construction hereinafter cle- 2o scribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings,wherein like letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a fragmental face view of a pair of trousers having a waistband made in accordance with 5 my invention applied thereto. 3 5 To the trousers (indicated at A in the accompanying drawings) is shown attached a band a. This band a preferably constitutes the back-band for the trousers, as well as the waistband therefor, and is constructed in the following manner: The lower edge of the band is folded over on itself, as indicated at b. The stitches which secure the fold I) also secure in place textile securing-loops c after each of such loops has been passed through 4 5 the eye cl of a metallic securing-shank 6. By this arrangement the eye (Z of each metallic securing-shank is secured within a textile securing-loop c, the free ends of the textile loops being secured by the stitching which secures the fold of the band. The metallic securingshanks are provided, in addition to the eyes d, with clamps f, which are adapted to'embrace the ends of the button-loops g h and secure the same to the metallic shanks,

as shown in Fig. at. The button-loops g are elastic and are secured to that portion of the waistband where the most strain is had upon the button-loopsfor instance, in the back of the garment while the flexible but inelastic button-loops h are secured to those portions of the band where the least strain is hadfor instance, at the sides of the garment. At that portion of the garment where the elastic loops are employed inelastic tabs 1' with buttonholes j are provided, which inelastic tabs are located directly back of the elastic loops,

so that each buttonhole of an inelastic tab will register with one of the elastic loops,'as shown in Fig. 3. The tabs i may be secured to the band in the same manner that the loops c are fastened-that is, by the stitches which secure the fold b of the band.

I have stated that my band may constitute a combined back-band or lining and waistband, but in some cases it may be desirable to provide a separate back-band-as, for instance, when a fancy lining or one of contrasting color to that of the waistband is to be used. In such case the band may be constructed as represented in Fig. 5, wherein the body portion of the band is merely of the extent of the fold b, it being understood that the fold is afterward secured to a separate back-band or lining.

It will be observed that by my invention I provide a cheap and efficient waistband for garments which is simple in .construction and wherein the bu tton-loops, when they have become worn, may be readily replaced by new button-loops without ripping out any 0 of the stitching which secures the parts together or cutting away any portion of the band proper, and wherein either elastic or inelastic button-loops may be connected with the same button.

I am aware that heretofore waistbands have been devised wherein a plurality of button holes for use on the same button were provided, and such I donot claim broadly; but

' hat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A waistband for garments, comprising a Waistband proper, securing-loops having the free ends thereof sewed to the band, metallic shanks secured within and carried by said securing-loops, Which metallic shanks are provided with clamps thereon, buttonloops secured in and carried by the clamps of the metallic shanks, whereby the button-loops may be removed Without disconnecting the metallic shank from the band and buttonloops or tabs independent of each other and IO of the band proper carried by said band, the buttonhole of each of said tabs registering with a loop carried by a metallic shank, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
