Description
B. DIXON;
Tile Kiln.
'Pa'tehted May 1, 1866.
n. PETERS. mlo-Lnhognphur, Waihinglorl. by c UNITED STATES PATENT Orri'cno JoHN B. DIXON, 0F GENEVA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TILE-KILNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,307, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. DIXON, of Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Kilns for Burning Tiles and other Similar Uses; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, parts being represented as broken away to show the interior; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
In the different figures the sameletters refer to identical parts.
A is the body of the kiln, built of brick or other non-combustible material, having an arched roof, B, similarly constructed. The building is arranged with suitable and conveniently-arranged doorways With tight-fittin g doors.
The floor O is constructed of lattice-work, and this is slightly elevated upon suitable supports above the true floor of the building, and is so supported that there may be afree circulation through the latticed floor into the chimneys.
D D are fire-places in the side or ends of the buildings, of ordinary construction, communicating with the internal fiues, E E, which open below the arched roof directly into the body of the kiln.
Along another side or end are a series of openings, F F, leading into a horizontal flue, G, running along the building, so as to receive all the openings F.
A single chimney, H, discharges all the air and smoke that may enter the openings F.
The tiles or other things intended to be baked being properly arranged in the kiln, the
fires are built, and the heat, ascending through the tines E, passes into the body of the kiln above. The draft descends through the tiles, being equally diffused through every part of the kiln, and escapes through the openings F, flue G, and chimney H.
I do not restrict my claim to the particular arrangement of the flues herein described, for they may be located in any convenient parts of the kiln but What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the fines E, opening near the top of and within the kiln A, with the open floor O and return-fines F, connected with the chimney H,-the Whole being arranged and employed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whcreofI have signed myna-me to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN B. DIXON.
