"PATENT OFFICE.
wHlFFL/ETREE-HooK.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,731, dated June 25', 1895. Application led April 23, 1895. Serial No. 546,931, (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HANS P. EGEDAL, a citi! zen of the United States, residing at Thor, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful \Vhiffletree Hook, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in whiftletree hooks.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of whiiietree hooks, and to provide a simple and inexpensive device, adapted to enable a trace to be readily attached to and quickly removed from a whifetree, and capable ot' securely holding a trace and of absolutely preventing any accidental unfastening of the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangementof parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a whiftletree hook, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the spring actuated bolt.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a casing constructed of suitable metal, and provided with a ferrule or ca'p 2 receiving an end of a whiftletree 3, and lthe casing is provided at its front with a cylindri! cal housing 4, and a socket 5, separated from the housing by a space or opening 6, to receive a trace, to permit a spring actuated bolt 7 of the housing to engage the trace. The casing has a concave rear face 8, adjacent to the ferrule or cap 2, to conform to the configuration of a whiftletree, and it is provided with flanges 9, perforated to receive suitable fastening devices for holding the cap or ferrule on the Whiftletree.
The socket 5 is closed at its outer side, and is provided with an opening which registers with the bore or opening of the cylindrical housing.
The bolt 7 is provided with a hollow or tubular inner portion 10, receiving a spiral or coiled spring 1 1, having its inner end engaging a transverse pin 12, and its outer end bearing against the solid portion of the bolt, and forcing the latter outward, and holding the outer extremity in the socket 5. The inner tubular portion lO of the bolt is provided at its bottom with a longitudinal slot 13, and it has an opening 14 at its upper face of sufficient size to permit the coiled spring to be readily inserted into and removed from the tubular portion of the boltl The transverse pin or fastening device l2 passes through the bolt, and the top and bottom ofthe cylindrical housing of the casing, and by removing the fastening devicethe bolt may be readily detached, and the spring exposed. By locating the spring within the bolt as shown, it is supported, and its durability'is correspondingly increased. The outer end of vthe b olt tits snugly in the socket 5, and the inner end ot' the bolt is provided with a head l5, to enable it to be readily retracted to release a trace.
It will be seen that the whiffletree hook is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in its construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it may be readily applied to a whiffletree. It will also be apparent that it is capable of securely confining a trace, and of preventing any accidental disengagement ot' the same..
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction vmay be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.-
What I claim is- A whiiiietree hook, comprisinga casing having a ferrule or cap to receive a whiffletree, and provided at its front with a cylindrical housing and having a socket located adjacent to the housing and registering with theopening thereof, the housing and the socket being separated by a trace receiving opening or space, a bolt arranged in the housing and engaging the socket and provided with a tubular inner portion and having a slot at one side, and an opening at the opposite side, a spiral spring located within the tubular portion of IOO the bolt and being of a size to pass through my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the opening of the same, and a transverse pin the presence of two Witnesses. passing through the cylindrical housing and through the opening and slot of the boit and HANS P. EGEDAL. 5 having the inner end of the spring bearing lWitnesses:
against it, substantially as described. G. E. TOKHEIM,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as B. M. MANDSAGER.
