J, P. DILLIN. BAG PASTENER.
No. 541,729. Patented June 25, 1895.

said fastener.
v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. DILLIN, OF ARDMORE, PENNSYLVANIA- BAG- FASTENER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part or Letters latent No. 541,729, dated June 25, 1895.
Application filed August 1894.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. 'DILLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ard more, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Fasteners, whichimprovement is fully set forth in the'following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of improvements in bag fasteners which are simple in construction and ettective in operation, the novel features of which will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a bagfastener embodying my invention, and a portion of a bag to which the same is applicable. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of Fig. 3 represents a sect-ion on line 00 a, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an end view of Fig. 3.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the bag fastener, and B an eye in an extension-of the same.
0 designates a recessed head or raised portion at the extremity of said fastener, opposite the said eye B.
D designates a throat in the body of .the de vice, which at one end is of reduced width, the end nearer the opening D being however of sufficient width to permit the passage therethrough of a knob or swell on the cord E, one end of the latter being attached to the eye B. The throat D communicates with the recess Fin the head 0, said recess being of substantially the same diameter as the flexible tie or cord E, and having its base rounded as at G, the outer extremity of said recess having the counterbore H, as seen in Fig. 4.
The under portion of the fastener'which contacts with the cord E, is concaved at K, so that at its junction M with the base of the recess F, is formed a bight N, by means of which the cord E is prevented from intermediate slipping when the parts are in the position seen in Figs. 1 and 3.
In Fig. 1, the device is shown, in operative position, L designating the upper portion of a bag, which is gathered together and has the Serial No. 521,287. (No model.)
cord E passed around it, one end of said cord being secured to the fastener at B, whilethe other end is passed through the throat D, and then pulled to the right until the knot or swell M is in the position seen in Figs. 1 and 3, at which point it will be firmly held, as is evident.
Especial attention-is called to the function attained by having the bight N acting in conjunction with the knot M, the cord E being thereby prevented from slipping outwardly, owing to said bight, or inwardly, owing to said knot, and it will also be noted that the knot or swell M of the flexible tie, when the same is in operative position as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, is below the top of the head 0, so that the liabilityof said knot being struck or displaced by any object at the side and top of the fastener, is reduced-to a minimum. To unfasten the tie, it is only necessary to draw the knot M upwardly out of engagement with the counter-bore and pull it toward the throat D, the bight N holding stationary that portion of the tie contacting therewith, whereupon the knot can then pass readily through said throat as is evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters the head 0 and recess F in said head, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a bag fastener consisting of a block'naving the body A with an eye B at one end, a head 0 at the other end, a throat D in its body with a re- I duced width at the end adjacent to said head, the recess F on the upper face and the recess K on the under faceof said head, and a flexible cord secured to said eye and having a swell or knob adapted to pass through said throat, but not through said recess F, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. As an article of manufacture, a bag fastener, consisting of the body piece A having the eye B, and throat D therein, the head 0 and the recess F therein, said head being eounterbored at H, and having its under side eoneaved at K, in combination with afiexible iie secured thereto, and having a knot or swell m thereon, substantially as described.
JOSEPH P. DILLIN.
