CANNER OR COOKER.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,276, dated June 4, 189 5.
Application filed January 26, 1895- Serial No. 536,367. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, CRUTCHER DUTY SHEP- HERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Oanner or Cooker, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in canners and cookers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient utensil, adapted for canning fruits and for general cooking, and capable of retaining the flavors of the fruits, meats, or other substances being canned or cooked.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a canner and cooker constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the canner and cooker, the cover being removed.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. t
1 designates a hollow base constructed of sheet metal or similar material, and provided at its top with a flange 2. This base may be of any desirable configuration, such as rectangular, or circular, or it may be constructed as shown in the accompanying drawings with straight sides and rounded ends, to adapt it to the ordinary construction of stove holes.
The base or bottom portion 1 is provided at its ends with handles 3, and it is adapted to contain a quantity of water, and to generate steam, which is discharged upon the articles being cooked or canned, by means of upward extending tubes 4, provided at their tops with inward extending substantially L-shaped discharge spouts 5. The lower ends of the tubes 4 are removably fitted in cylindrical sockets 6 of the base, and these sockets are formed by vertical tubes arranged at intervals, and located adjacent to the side edges or faces of the base. The sockets 6 are provided at opposite sides with openings 7, and the tubes& have corresponding openings 8, which may be made to register fully or partially with the openings 7 of the sockets. Any suitable means may be provided for permitting water to be supplied to the base or one of the sockets can be used for that purpose.
In order to retain the flavors and aromas of the various kinds of goods being canned or cooked, a cover 9 is provided, and it extends over the steam tubes, and the goods which are placed on top of the base beneath the depending terminals of the discharge spouts 5. The lower edges of the cover are received within the peripheral flange 2 of the base, and a suffioiently tight joint is effected.
It will be seen that the cooking apparatus is adapted for canning and various kinds of cooking and steaming, and that it is particularly adapted for warming dishes and that it is capable of retaining their contents in a moist condition, and of preventing articles from being dried by the heat necessary for warming them. It has also been found that this manner of canning does not destroy the color of the fruit.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
