SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,909, dated November 19, 1895. Application filed August 12, 1895. Serial No. 558,965. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN ENDREs, a citizen v of the United States, and a resident of South Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

In a previous application, Serial No. 540, 632,

filed March 5, 1895, I show and describe both parting-stops in a window-frame as having simultaneous lateral adjustment; and my present invention has for its object to provide window-frames each of which has a rigid part- I 5 ing-stop and a laterally adjustable partingstop, whereby I economize in the production of such frames and at the same time insure a means for locking a window-sash in various positions of its possible adjustment and at the same time prevent rattle of said sash. Hence said invent-ion consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently 2 5 claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents awindow-frame embodying my improvements as viewed on the plane indicated by line 1 1 in Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view on the plane indicated by line 3 3 in Fig. 2, a part of the framing being broken away to permit illustration of a stay-strip embodied in my improvements; Fig. 4, a detail horizontal sec- 3 5 tion on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a detail View on the plane indicated by line 5 5 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of a guide and bearing-bracket also embodied in my improvements. Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents awindow-frame of ordinary construction, except in the matter of a parting-stop and other details hereinafter specified. Both parting-stops B O of the window-frame are beveled in opposition to correspondinglybeveled edges of the sash D, and only the parting-stop O is movable laterally in the adjacent j amb of said frame in order that a clamping action may be had against said sash to 5 o lock the latter in various positions of its possible vertical adjustment, the other partingstop B being rigidly secured in position.

The movable parting-stop O isprovided with oblique wings I), that engage corresponding notches c in a staff E, that is loose in the adjacent jamb of the window-frame, and by vertical movement of the staff the lateral adjustment of said stop is effected because of the engagement of the stop-wings with the staff-notches.

In order to vertically adjust the staff E, I provide the same with a plate F, having a lug cl in dovetail or other suitable slip connection with a rack-bar G, that is guided in a bracket H, fast on a block I in the windowframe, a pinion J, journaled in the bracket, being meshed with the teeth of said bar and connected to a rod K, that extends through a socket-plate L, fast upon the inside casing of said window-frame. The rod K is preferably square, especially so much thereof as extends through the socket-plate L, and a crank-key l/I enters said socket-plate to engage said rod, the connection between the key and rod being preferably such that the former may be readily disengaged.

The bracket H is best shown in Fig. 6, and the face-lug 6, together with the right-angle edge-lug f, constituting parts of said bracket, constitute the guides for the rack-bar G,above specified. The bracket is further provided with a slot 9 and hook-lug h, that serve as bearings for the journals of pinion J, and the rod K being detached from said pinion the latter may be readily disengaged from said bracket after removal of said rack, these parts being accessible through the usual opening to the weight-pocket in which they are contained.

In order to prevent the movable partingstop and the parallel staff from falling out of place when the window-sash is removed, I provide the adjacent jamb of the windowframe with a chamber 2' for a horizontal strip 3', that is held in place by a screw In to have one end thereof engage a lengthwise notch m in said staff, the screw being concealed by one of the inner sash-stops n, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. By loosening the screw 74; the strip jmay be pushed back in the chamber 2' to clear the notch m in the vertically-adjustable staff, and thus permit removal of this staff and the laterally-adjustable parting-stop.

The travel of the rack-bar G is limited in opposite directions by means of stops 1) on the window-frame, and as a matter of preference the parting-stop G has its wings I) alternately on opposite sides, the notches c in the staff E being correspondingly disposed to thus avoid any material weakening of said stop and stait.

\Vhile I have shown the oblique stop-win gs and staif-notches, it is possible to substitute other means for insuring lateral adjustment of parting-stop G when the rack-andqiinion mechanism is actuated, and in other matters of detail certain variationsare possible within. the scope of my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.. A window-frame provided with a bracket presenting guide-lugs and journal-bearin gs, a rack-bar opposing the lugs, a pinion mounted in the hearings to mesh with the rack-bar, a staff connected to said rack-bar, a loose parting-stop, and suitable means for effecting lateral adjustment of the partingstop coincident with longitudinal movement of the staff.

2. A window-frame provided with a loose parting-stop, a staff in such connection with the stop as to effect lateral adjustment of the same coincident with longitudinal movement of itself, and a stay in the window-frame engageable with a len gthwisc notch in said stailf.

A window-frame having a rigid partingstop and a movable parting-stop, oblique wings extended from the movable stop, a re ciproeative staff having oblique notches engaged by said wings, a plate secured to the stafl and provided with a lug, a raclbbar detachably connected to the lug, suitable guides for the rack-bar, a pinion in mesh with said rack-bar, a rod extending from the pinion through the window-frame casin g, and a crank-key engageable with the outer end of the rod.
