(No Model.)
T. J. KING. WASHING MACHINE.
No. 549,797. PatentedNov. 12,1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'THEOPHLESS J. KING, or MINERAL ELLS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES owEr or PALO PINTO, TEXAS.
WA-S-'HING.-MACHIN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,797, dated November 12, 1895. Application filed May 22, 1895. Serial No. 550,167. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEornLEss J. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Wells, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views, Fig. 3 being a sectional View of a portion of the drum showing one edge of the door, end of the cross-piece that holds the slats of the door together, lock, the hinge, and the countersunk thumb-screw, Fig. 4 being a perspective View of the door, and Fig. 5 a perspective View of one of the slats.
My invention is described as follows:
A is awater-tight tub divided into two compartments a a, the two compartmentsbeing divided by a water-tight partition a In the front compartment is pivoted a cylindrical drum B. The journal I) of said drum is secured in suitable bearings b on the upper edge of the tub. One end of the journal I) terminatesina crank-handle 12 by means of which the drum is rotated. Said drum consists of heads C, to which is secured slats 0. These slats are close enough to keep the clothes or any part thereof from falling out, but wide enough apart to allow the water to flowfreelybetween them. Each one of these slats c is beveled from the under side upward, bringing the slats to feather-edges c at their upper corners. Said drum is provided with an opening 01. Said opening is provided with a door (1''. The said door consists of two or more slats fastened together by cross-pieces 61 (1 secured to their under sides. The crosspiece d is just the distance from the end of the slats as is the thickness of the drum-head. The cr0ss-pieced is just the distance from the other end of the slat as is twice the thickness of the drum-head, so that in putting the door in place I slip the long ends under one of the hoops (1 until the shorter ends may be let down by the inner edge of the hoop, put in place under the hoop, then slipped until the cross-piece (1 comes against the inner face of the drum-head. In order to hold the door in place a stay 6 is hinged to the cross-piece cl by the hinge e, and when the door is in place this stay is turned up. In so doing its free end is brought against the inner face of the other drum-head and is kept in place by a countersunk thumb-screw 6 (See Fig. The front compartment of said tub A is provided with a cover E, which is hinged to the upper edge of the partition a Said cover is water-tight, and when let down no water can escape between it and the upper edge of the compartment a. Said tub A is secured on the upper face of a fire-box F, each end of the fire-box extending beyond the ends of the tub. Said fire-box is provided at its front end with a fire-grate and door f and at its rear end with a smoke-stack f. The front compartment of the tub A is provided with a faucet g, situated near the bottom of said tub for the purpose of withdrawing the water therefrom. The compartment 0/ of said tub is provided with a faucet g for the purpose of withdrawing the water therefrom.
The device is provided with legs h, or it may be seated on a suitable frame or brickwork.
The two compartments a a are partly filled with water, the clothing is put in the drum,
and the opening (Z, closed by the door d, is made in the fire-box and the water heated, and the washing is done by rotating the drum, and the clothing being carried through the water thereby is soon cleansed.
The slats being brought to a feather-edge at their upper corners makes the drum much easier to rotate, the water giving less resistare allowed to remain in the hot water to soak lower edge of cross-piece d"; thumb-screw c and bleach. countersunk in head 0, and adapted to hold Having described my invention, what I stay 6, in place, substantially as shown and claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters described and for the purposes set forth.
5 Patent, is- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 15 In a washing machine, substantially as in presence of two witnesses. shown, the combination of the cylindrical TIIEOPIILESS J. KING. drum B, consisting of the heads 0, slats c, Vitnesses: and openings (1; door (Z, consisting of slats c, MASON IVILLIAMS, 10 and cross-pieces (Z (Z stay e, hinged to the FRED. MILLER.
