PATENT OFFICE.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,359, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filed November 22, 1894 serial No. 529,593. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KENYON HAWKS, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a sprinkling-nozzle, and especially that kind used for lawn purposes, although its use is capable of a much wider scope.
The purpose of my invention is to project the water against a spraying-deflector, whereby a more beautiful effect is produced.
A further object of my invention is to provide a spraying device of exceeding simplicity and durability and which can be applied with equal facility to the various kinds of hose or water-plugs now in common use.
To this end my invention consists in certain peculiar features whereby the escaping water from thenozzle impinges against the outside and passes through the inside of a deflector attached to the nozzle.
My invention still further consists in means for facilitating the attachment and detachment of the deflector from the front end of the body portion of the nozzle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the preferred form of my complete invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through my device; and Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the main or body portion of my device, in which the deflector has been removed and a cap substituted.
The reference-letter a denotes the body portion of my device, which is provided with the usual screw-thread b, by which it is applied to the ordinary hose or water-plug. This body portion has the general outline of the frustum of a cone, and across its base ex tends a removable screw-threaded cap 0, con taining a circular series of perforations or discharge-orifices cl. These orifices surround a nipple e, which is cast integral with the web 7 c and is externally threaded to receive the threads of the supplemental section or deflector f, and by which the latter is attached to the former. This nipple 6 allows the water to escape from the nozzle into the hollow deflector, from whence it escapes through small perforations g in the larger end of the deflector. This supplemental section or deflector is also given the shape of the frustum of a cone, across the base of which extends a concavo-convex perforated wall h, and in which the cluster of perforations g are made.
The deflector is preferably cast in one piece, and its smaller end is attached to the nozzle proper through the medium of the screwthreaded parts so that its flaring outer surface will lie in the path of the water escaping from the perforations d and cause the latter to be deflected outwardly in the manner before described.
It will be observed that when the deflector is attached to the exterior of the body portion of the nozzle its flaring walls lie sub stantially parallel with those of the body portion, thereby giving the whole the general form of a pair of frustrated cones with the base of one attached to the apex of the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sprinkling nozzle provided with the usual perforations and having the general outline of a frustrated cone, in combination with a conical deflector the flaring sides of which lie in the path of the water projected through the perforations of the nozzle, an externally threaded nipple adapted to engage the threads of an orifice in the deflector whereby the latter is attached and detached as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, inasprinkling nozzle, of a main bodyportion a, provided with perfotions and an externally threaded nipple or projection e, a hollow, conical deflector adapted to screw upon said nipple, and a perforated web h, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM KENYON HAWKS.
