QRATB FOR STOVES 0B RANGES. No. 549,040. Patented Oct. 29,-18-95.
AN DREW'IGRMIAM. PHUTOUTHQWASH I N Gm N. DC.
UNTTEE STATES PATENT QFFMJFQ WILLIAM WEWERS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GEM CITY STOVE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
GRATE FOR STCVES O R RANGES.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,040, dated October 29, 1895.
Application filed May 2,1895. Serial No. 547, N model-J To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grates for Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved grate for stoves and ranges, and has for its object to provide means for suspending the gratein such manner that it may be oscillated laterally in both a forward and backward direction and sidewise to thoroughly free the grate and fuel of ashes.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel features and in the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter fully vdescribed, and pointed out in the claims following the description, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a vertical central section of my improved grate. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the suspension-links.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates the lower portion of the fire-pot of a stove, which is supported on a base-frame 2 of any ordinary or approved construction. I
The numeral 3 indicates the grate, which may be of any preferred form and construction, and is provided upon its periphery with three or more horizontally-projecting lugs 4, all of said lugs preferably projecting laterally in the same direction and in the same plane, as shown. The lugs 4 are provided with rounded bearings 5 and are freely and detachably suspended in elongated links 6, which in turn are suspended from hooks 7, projecting inwardly from the base-frame 2, said hooks being formed with rounded bearings in manner similar to the lugs 4.
I have shown the hooks 7 as being formed on a base-frame 2, arranged beneath the firepot; but it will of course be understood that such base-frame may be dispensed with and the hooks formed directly upon the fire-pot itself The grate is provided with a handle or extension 8, forming a shaker, and by means of which the grate may be freely oscillated laterally in every direction, whereby the grate and fuel are thoroughly freed of ashes and clinkers, the links freely swinging in any direction in which the grate may be moved and ofiering almost no resistance to the movement of the grate whatever.
I have shown the grate suspended by three v links, and this is the preferred arrangement, for said number of links disposed in the manner shown permits the grate to be oscillated with the minimum amount of force or exertion; but itwill be evident that the number of such links employed may be varied to suit different sizes and forms of grates without departing from the spirit of my invention, which contemplates the employment of any number of such links when arranged in such manner as to permit of the grate being freely oscillated laterally in every direction.
I have illustrated my grate as being provided with a dumping-section 9, which is adapted to be withdrawn laterally from over the grate 3 and thus drop the contents of the fire-pot therethrough; but this forms no part of the present invention, the same forming the subject-matter of an application for United States Letters Patent filed on the 23d day of January, 1895, Serial No. 535,954.
As shown in the drawings, the major axis of each link 6, as regards the space within the link, is considerably greater than the aggregate of the vertical dimensions of the hook 7 and lug 4. By this construction of the links vertical movement of each end of the grate, in addition to the oscillatory movement of the entire grate, are secured, and the grate is susceptible of being readily detached whenever occasion demands.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with the fire-pot and supporting-base frame of a'stove, of a grate having its periphery provided with horizontally projecting lugs 4, elongated open links 6 detachably engaged at their lower ends with the said peripheral lugs of the grate, and hooks 7 located above the grate and engaged with the upper ends of the said links, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with a fire-pot, and a supporting base frame provided with inwardly projecting hooks 7, of an oscillatory grate having its periphery provided with horizontally projecting lugs 4, and elongated open links 6 having their upper ends mounted on said hooks and their lower ends detachably engaged with the said peripheral projections of the grate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- WILLIAM WEWERS. Witnesses:
WM. H. HEIDBREDER, HERMAN H OENER.
