ToaZZ whom it may con/0677 Beit known that I, HORACE S. STYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rsing City, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyng drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which' form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a table with supporting-legs, which are capa'ble of being folded against the top when it is desired that the table occupy but' small space, the Construction being such that the brace for onepair of the supporting-legs is so connected to the top as to permit said legs to swing outwardly in order that a skirt may be passed over the end of the table when the device is used as an ironing-board.

My invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevaton partly in section, showing a folding table or ironing-board constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View; Fig. 3, a side elevation, partly in section, showing one pair of legs swung out- :vardlysubstantially p'arallel with the table- A desi gnates the table-top or ironing-board, which is provided at one end With a transverse batten a, to which are hinged a pair of supporting-legs B B. The legs B B are preferably crossed and are provided at a point adjacent to their intersection with a transverse groove or recess b, to oneside of which is attached a turn-button b', which is adapted to be turned so that one end willlie over the groove or recess. It will be noted that the hinges which connect the legs to the tabletop are attached to the inner side of both the batten a, and the lgs B, so that said legs'will be permitted to swing inward, and when extended their u pper ends abut against thebatten.

A' designates a block which is rigidly secured to the under side of the table-top or board A, and adjoining this block are attached strips a', which are adapted to retain a bail C in en'gagement with the block, the inturned ends of the bail engaging recesses or apertures in the block. The bail C is of such a length that the connecting portion thereof will engage the groove or recessb in the legs B, and when in such engagement will brace the legs in an extended position, the turn-button b' being turned to lie over the connecting portion of the bail so as to-hold the parts rigidly connected. The block A' is centrally recessed, so that the turn-button will lie therein when'the legs are folded against the under side of the top, and the end of the bail is bent, as shown, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. N D designates a pair of legs which are crossed and provided with a transverse groove or recess d and turn-button d' similar to the legs B. The legs D are connected to each other at their upper ends by a transverse piece D' ,having a central rounded portion, and the blocks d and d which connect the legs to the tabletop, embrace this rounded portion so that said legs can be swung in both directions.

C' designates a bail which is similar in construction to the bail C, the bent ends engaging with a slideE and being retained in such engagement by strips h h. The slide is provided with a longitudinal slot e, through which passes the threaded end of a screw F, attached to the top of the table, a thumb-nut F' engaging the screw and hearing against the slide so as to hold the same in an adjusted position, the slide being further held in engagement with the table-top by means of a strap g.

The bail C' is of less width than the bail C, so that it will lie within the same when said bails are folded against the under side of the table, the outer ends of the bails being bent outwardly, as shown, to allow the side members to lie againsttho under side of the table while the connecting portions thereof overlie the fixtures attached to the table.

The table-top is provided with'` a hook I and one pair of legs with an eye z',wi th which the IOO hook engages for holding the legs against displacement when folded.

In operation, When the legs B are extended they are held in such position by the bail O, and when the legs D are positioned at right angles With the table-topthey can be held in such position by the bail C'. Now should it be desired to change the position of the legs D, so that they will project outwardly, it is only necessary to loosen the thunb -nut so that the slide and bail will be allowed to move. This arrangement is necessary when the de- Vice is to be used as an ironing-board, so as to permit a skirt to be placed over the board A. After the skirt has been placed in position the legs can be swung back to their original position and held rigidly by tightening the thumb-nut.

It will be noted that the upper side of the slide is beveled longitudinally, so that said slide will be permitted to rock slightly When the legs D are swung outwardly.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination With the top A having legs B and D hinged thereto, said legs carrying turn-buttons; of a bail C pivoted to the under side of the top and adapted to engage the leg B and its turn-button; a plate Ein sliding engagement With the under side of the top and provided with a longitudinal slot through which the threaded end of a screw passes; a thumb-nut on the screw for securing the plate in an adjusted position; and a bail C' pivoted to the sliding plate and adapted to engage the leg D and its turn-button, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
