SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,918, dated October 29, 1895.
Application tiled July 1, 1895. Serial No. 554,527. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HnzExIAH HowE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in air-equalizers for stoves, furnaces, or other heaters, and is more particularly designed for use in connection with heating-drums for such heaters.
The object of the invention is to provide an air-equalizer provided with a number of deiiecting-plates by whichy the air supplied to the stove or heater or drum is retarded in its iiow, and thus prevented from being fed too fast. It is also an object to provide an improved drum to be used in connection therewith which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of partshereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of an air-equalizer and heating-drum constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a rectangular box having an opening 2 at each end, one of which is for the entrance of fresh air and the other for the escape thereof. Located in this box are a number of opposite alternatelyarranged shelves or partitions 3, extending inwardly from one side to near the opposite side of the box and inclined at an angle to the plane thereof, there being a space between the free ends thereof and the side of the box for the passage of air. The said free or inner ends of these partitions are provided with strips 4 at right angles thereto. From this construction it will beseen that the supply of air will be retardedv in its iiow through the box, thus preventing it from being fed too rapidly.
The numeral 5 designates a heating-drum closed at top and bottom and provided with a 'central smoke-pipe connected with a stove, furnace, or other heater. This drum at its lower end is connected by means of a pipe 6 with the air-equalizer, and at the opposite upper end is provided with an outlet 7 to heat the room in which the drum is located. This drum is provided with alternately-arranged partitions 8 to give a tortuous direction to the air, so that it will be thoroughly heated by radiation from the smoke-pipe. The smokepipe may be connected with another drum or head directly to the outside of the building, according to circumstances. Connected with the drum at the oppositevside to pipe 6 is a foul-air pipe 9, the lower end of which extends nearly to the iloor of the room in which the drum is located, and extends up into the drum and communicates with the smoke-pipe, the latter being provided with a short halfround ilue or pipe 10 at the point where the pipe 9 enters thesame. rThis pipe 10 is open at both ends and serves, by suction, to draw the foul air from the room into and through the smoke-pipe. The smoke-pipe is provided with a damper 12, having a semicircular re cess in the edge, and is adapted to close or regulate the draft in the smoke-pipe without, however, affecting the foul-air pipe, as when closed to shut o the draft in the smoke-pipe the recess will register with the half-round pipe, so that the foul-air pipe will still remain open or in communication with the smokepipe.
Having thus fully described my invention,
An air equalizer for stoves, heaters, or heating drums, comprising the box formed with supply and outlet openings at the ends and the alternately arranged inclined partitions extending partly across the box and provided at their free ends with strips at right angles thereto; substantially as described.
