BELL FOR BLAST- FU RNAC ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 548,505, dated October 22, 1895.
Applicatl on filed February 7, 1895. Serial No. 537,629. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. BERGER and MARTIN H. THOMPSON, of New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Bell for Blast-Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in bells for blast-furnaces to prevent damage to the furnace by the dangerous explosions frequently occurring in the top of the stack and caused by the ignition of the accumulated gases or other matter.
The invention consists in a bell for blastfurnaces having a peculiar form and construction, whereby it is capable of automatically opening to discharge gases, even when the hopper is loaded with stock.
The invention also consists in the peculiar construction of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement.
The bell A is adapted to open or close the usual hopper B in the upper end of the stack 0, and the apex of the said bell A is formed with a cylindrical extension A, normally closed at its top by a door or valve D, adapted to open outwardly whenever an explosion takes place in the upper end of the stack 0,
so that the bell forms an outlet for the explosion to prevent damage to the stack of the furnace or parts connected therewith. The bell A is provided with the usual means for raising or lowering the bell to open and close the hopper B.
It will be observed that the extension A raises the door or valve D above the upper end of the furnace, which makes it possible for the hopper to be full of stock and yet not hold the door from opening. Therefore it will be seen that the object of our invention is adequately accomplished.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the hopper of a blast furnace, of a bell seated within the hopper, the said bell, consisting of a main downwardly and outwardly flaring portion extending normally both above and below the hopper, and a perpendicular cylindrical extension formed at the apex of the body or flaring portion of the bell, said perpendicular portion being of less length than the flaring portion, and an outwardly opening valve pivoted at one side of the said cylindrical extension and normally closing the top of the same, the said valve being adapted to be opened automatically by the force of accumulated gases or explosions, the said bell being so related to the hopper as to extend approximately half its length above the top of the hopper when the bell is in its closed position, whereby when the bell is lowered into its lowermost position the upper cylindrical portion thereof will project above the upper surface of the hopper and all danger of the valve being clogged or affected by the contents of the hopper is avoided and the valve is free to operate at all times, substantially as described.
