VVALVE-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,168, dated October 22, 1895. Application filed February 4, 1895- Serial No. 537,266. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV ABRAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the county of McLeod and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valve-gear for englues; and it consists in various features, details, and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my valve-gear; Figs. 2 and 3, vertical transverse sectional views (substantially on the line 00 00, Fig. 4,) showing the parts in different positions; Fig. 4, a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 5 a plan view, of a portion of the shifting devices.
A indicates the engine-shaft, B a flanged collar rigidly affixed thereto by set-screw a, and C a disk also affixed to the shaft, as shown in Fig. 4.
D indicates a pin or stud carried by the disk 0 and collar B when the disk is employed, but which, when the disk is omitted, as indicated in- Fig. 1, will be secured to the collar.
Mounted upon the pin or stud D is the cocentric E, which is provided with the slot b, concentric with the pin, to receive the shaft A, thereby permitting said eccentric to be swung laterally with reference to the shaft upon the said pin or stud as a pivot, as shown in Fig. 3. The eccentric is provided with the usual strap F, and is further provided with ways or guides c c to receive a block G,carried by a pin H, secured to a sleeve I, extending lengthwise of the shaft, one end of said sleeve being enlarged, as shown in Fig. 4, to fit upon the collar B.
In the collar B is an elongated slot 01, while in the eccentric there is a radial slot 6, through V both of which slots the pin H passes, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4:.
Secured to the shaft A is a second sleeve J, which, encircling the shaft, fits within the sleeve I, the said sleeves being provided with inclined slots f and g, which intersect or cross each other.
Mounted upon the outer sleeve I is a ring or collar K which is grooved circumferentially to receive the band L of a suitable shifting mechanism, and which collar is provided with a stud h, upon which are carried the blocks 11 and j, said blocks being fitted to slide, respectively, in the slots f'and g.
From this construction it follows that lateral movement of collar K will cause the outer sleeve I to turn or rotate upon the inner sleeve, which is held against rotation; but as the pin H is carried by said sleeve I the pin will partake of the movement and will be carried, for instance, from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig.3. Pin H passes through the eccentric, and hence when the pin moves about the shaft the eccentric will also be rocked or turned relatively to and upon the shaft.
The sleeve swings from a center coincident with that of the shaft, while the eccentric 'swings from the pin D. Hence when the eccentric is rocked as above described there is a difference in movement of the pin H and the eccentric, which is provided for by means of the radial slot 6 in the eccentric, the block G, carried by said pin H, moving inward and outward radially between the guides c 0, according to the direction in which the sleeveI is turned.
When the sleeve I is turned in one direction, the eccentric will be thrown to one side of the center. When the sleeve is turned in the opposite direction, the eccentric will be thrown to the other side of the center; but when the shifting band is left at an intermediate point, where the two slots f and g intersect, the eccentric will assume a neutral or dead position. (Shown in Figs 2 and 4..)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl 1. In combination with an engine shaft A, an oscillating sleeve I; a slotted collar B secured to the shaft within the sleeve I; a pin D carried by the collar; a pin H carried by the sleeve; and an eccentric pivoted upon'the pin D and provided with a lateral slot to receive the shaft, and with a radial slot to receive pin H.
2. In combination with an engine shaft A, an oscillating sleeve 1; a slotted collar B secured to the shaft; a pin D carried by the collar; a pin H carried by the sleeve; an eccentric pivoted upon the pin D and provided with a lateral slot to receive the shaft, and with a radial slot to receive pin H; ways or guides o c on the eccentric; and a block G fitted to said Ways and carried by the pin H.
3. In combination with shaft A; a slotted collarB secured thereto; an oscillating sleeve I provided with pin H a disk 0 secured to the shaft; a pin D carried by said disk and collar; and an eccentric pivoted upon the pin 1) and provided with a lateral slot to receive the shaft, and a radial slot to receive pin H.
