Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER S. PETTIT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,766, dated May 15, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. PETTIT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water Closets; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will cnable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of' this specitcation, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the line x x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is atop view of my improved water closet, the cover being removed.
My invention has for its object to so improve the construction of water-closets that the unpleasant eftluvia may not ascend through the discharge'pipe and be disseminated through the building; and it consists in combining with the discharge-pipe and with the seat or cover of the pan a valve opening automatically to permit the escape of the contents of the pan, and closing when the pressure upon the cover is removed.
A is the box or seat of the closet. B is the cover, and C the lid, of the same. The cover B is hinged to the box or seat A, and sup ported in a partially-open position by a spring in the ordinary manner.
The lid G is hinged to the cover B, as shown. D is the valve of the water-pipe E, which is opened by the head d of the valve-stem d being pressed down by the cover B when the closet is used, permitting a iiow of water into the pan F, and it is closed by the weight cl2 when the pressure upon the coverB is removed.
G is the discharge pipe through which the contents of the pan F escape as they are washed down by the flow of water from the pipe E.
The pipe G is cut across a short distance below the pan F, and the eut or opening is closed by a sliding valve, H. To the upper edge of the valve H is attached arod, I, the other end of which is pivoted to one end of the lever J. This lever is pivoted to a support, K, and its free end terminates in a head, j.
When the closet is used the cover B presses upon the head j, which operates the lever J and opens the valve H, permitting the escape ofthe contents of the pan F through the discharge pipe G into the sewer. When the pressure upon the cover B is removed the lever J is forced back into its former position and the valve H closed by a spring, L. By this improvement the pipe G is always free for the escape ofthe contents of the pau F when the closet is in use and always closed at all other times, preventing the escape of all noxious gases and odors from the pipe Gr into the building, and consequently all unpleasant or injurious effects from the proximity of the closet to inhabited or occupied rooms.
What I claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isu The combination of the valve H, rod I, and lever J with the discharge-pipe G and cover B of a water-closet, substantially as described7 and for the purpose set forth.
