UNTTnn STATES I FATnNT muon,
MANALOUS G. KEERAN, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO JOHN B. FRY, OF SAME PLACE.
SELF=LUBRICATING 'JOURN/lfBOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent Ne. 546,958, dated September 24, 1895. Application flied February 25, 1896. Serial No. 539,582. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Bo it known that I, MANALoUs G. KEERAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Lubricating Journal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a self-lubricating box for car-axles and other journals that will be simple in construction and insure a most perfect lubrication of the bearings without the necessity of the usual waste employed for this purpose; and it consists in a self-lubricating journalbox constructed substantially as shown in` the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical central section of a journal-box constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof taken on line a: of Fig. l.
In the accompanying drawingspd represents a car-axle box, which may be of the ordinary construction and is provided with the usual cap a at its outer end, and its inner end has the usual sections b c to close said end and prevent dirt and grit from entering the box, the cap admitting access to the interior of the box when desired.
The several parts above described are of the usual construction, and as they form no essential feature of the invention may be changed or modified as circumstances would require.
The axle Bis formed with the usual journal O, which is reduced in circumference to present a shoulder d, against which abuts the inner end of a sleeve D. This sleeve is closed at its outer end, with this exception, that it has an elongated slot e, extending diametrically across the end thereof. The slot e is to receive the tenon f upon the end of the journal C, thereby insuring the sleeve and jour nal turning together when the car-axle is in motion. The inner end of the sleeve D upon its exterior has a circumferential shoulder g, against which abuts the shoulder h of the brass E, said brass having its inner surface curved and concentric with the outer curved surface of the sleeve. The brass E upon its outer surface is formed with a groove t', with which engages a tongue lo upon the under side of a block F, which block may be of the usual construction.
The essential feature of the invention resides in the sleeve, with its slot or opening, and the journal of the axle having the tenen to fit in the slot or opening whereby the sleeve will turn with the journal, and in connection with lthe sleeve and journal the shoulder upon the sleeve and. the corresponding shoulder upon the brass retain the brass in position thereon and prevent it from slipping off, but will admit the brass, having a slight motion in a direction toward the outer end of the axle-box when required; also the brass as well as the sleeve may be conveniently removed when found necessary and a new brass substituted.
There may be many changes or modifications made in the details of construction of the several parts so long as the essential features of the invention are preserved, and any such changes as would come within the scope of ordinary mechanical skill may be made Without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a journal box, the axle provided with the journal O, and the shoulder el, the sleeve D, applied to the axle so as to remain stationary thereon, and provided with the shoulder g, and the brass E, placed upon the sleeve D, and provided with the shoulder 72 and groove t', in its top, combined with the block F, having a tongue llc to fit in the groove t', substantially as shown.
M. G. KEERAN.
