SCOOP-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,707, dated September 24:, 1895. Application filed July 1, 1895. Serial No. 554,571. (No model.)

Be it known that I, DAVID S. MCGUR'IHY, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoop-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a simple and substantial scoop-board that may be easily attached to and separated from a wagon-bed, and that may be made to occupy all the positions necessary to the proper operation of such devices. The invention is exemplified in the structure hereinafter described, and it is defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective representation of a scoop-board embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In Fig. 1 the bottom of a wagon-bed is shown at 1, the sides thereof at 2, and the shovel-surface of the scoop-board at 3. The wings or side pieces 4 of the scoop-board are cut away at their lower ends, as shown at 5, leaving an open space of triangular outline and curved sides. From the upper end or apex of the triangular space slot 6 extends upward and rearward in a curve that forms a continuation of the curve of the front side of the triangular space, and from the upper termination of the curved slot the straight and nearly vertical slot 7 rises, as shown. This description of the space and theslots applies when the board is upright, as shown in Fig. 1. Ties 10 connect the lower portions of the wings bridging the spaces 5. They lie flush against the outer surfaces of the wings and they each have an outward bend, as 11, adjacent to the rear side of the space. Additional ties, as 9, may be placed above the slots when it is desired to give the wings unusual strength. Pins 8 project from the sides of the bed in position to properly engage the slots of the wings. They are long enough to strike ties 10 when the board is lowered, as
shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and they are preferably formed on brackets, as 12, in Fig. 1, which are secured to the inner sides of the bed with the pins extended outward through holes in the bed.
Apart from the wings, the scoop-board may eling, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.2, the I ties 10 engage the pins and hold the board in its inclined position. When the board is thrown up onto the bed, as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, the pins rest between the rear sides of the spaces and the ties. The approximately-vertioal slot 7 may be inclined suffi- .ciently to draw the board closely against the end of the bed, when the board is inthe position shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A scoop board having side wings cut away at their lower ends substantially as shown and described, and slotted upward and rearward from the apex of the space, ties connecting the separated portions of the lower ends of the wings, such ties being bent outward adjacent to the rear sides of the space, and a bed having pins projecting from its sides, all in combination, for the-purpose set forth.
