WILLIAM D. ATTWOOD AND WILLIAM B. ST. JOHN, OF NEW EDINBURG,
ARKANSAS.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,043, dated August 2?, 1895. Application filed Aprilli,1895. sesame. 644.597. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that we, WILLIAM D. ATTWOOD and WILLIAM B. ST. JOHN, citizens of the United States, residing at New Edinburg, in the county of Cleveland and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in hooks adapted to take the place of snap-hooks,
' which are quickly adjusted, and after being accompanying drawings,
adjusted are prevented from being detached from their seat.
The invention is particularly applicable to use upon plow-lines, well-buckets, rope halters, fish-hooks, derricks, cables, logging and rafting, casting-anchors, and fastening ropes generally; and it consists of a hook having a ring or loop at one end extending outwardly, bent back upon itself, and again bent forwardly, the two bends being at right angles to one another.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our book shown applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is asimilar view looking at right angles to the direction in which Fig. 2 is taken.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the views.
1 represents the hook having formed at one end a loop or ring 2,'through which the rope or line 3 is adapted to be passed. lhis hook extends outwardly and at the point 4 is bent back upon itself, and at 5 is again bent in a forward direction, the two bends made being at right angles to one another.
In using our device the rope is normally through the ring 2 in the end of the hook and the hook is passed through the bit-ring 6, as
clearly shown. The rope 3 is then passed outwardly around the loop formed by the band 5 and forwardly upon itself.
By this construction a quick-action snapless hook is provided, which is prevented after it has been inserted from being withdrawn from its place by the action of the inner end of the cord or rope 3 upon the ring 6 or other part to which said hook is attached.
The invention is very simple in construction and is preferably made of a single piece of wire.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- Y The herein described quick action snapless hook made of a single piece of wire, formed with a loop or ring at one end, through which the rope is adapted to be passed, extending outwardly therefrom, bent back upon itself at one point and again bent forwardly, the two bends made therein being at right angles to one another, whereby the rope passing through said ring or loop may be passed around a supplemental hook and form a lock for holding said hook in place, substantially as described.
;In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
WILLIAM D. ATTWOOD,
WILLIAM B. ST. J OHN.
