M. JOHNSON. RAME.
No. 544,984. Patented Aug. 20, 1895.
UNiTED STATES Y@PATENT Orifice,
MOSES JOHNSON, OF HARRISBURG, ILLINOIS.
HAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,984, dated August 20, 1895.
Application tiled May 24, 1894. Serial No. 512.382. (No model.) v
To zZ/3 whom it may concern: l Be it known that I, MOsEs JOHNSON, resid-` ing at Harrisburg, in the county of Saline and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to improved means for attaching the chain-hook or tug-loop to the hame; and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive ar rangement` of parts so constructed that they can be quickly and conveniently adjusted to raise or lower the chain-hook or tug-loop, and whereby the hook or tug memberscan be detachably and interchangeably connected with the hame.
A further object is to provide an attaching means of the character stated, in which the pintle member, while capable of being easily moved out of its bearing portions, is held normally in place and locked from movement by a simple swinging latch member.
To these ends my invention consists in such novel combination andipeculiar arrangement of parts, such as will berst described in detail, and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a hamesection equipped with my improved devices. Fig. 2 is a faceview of the attachment, the latch member being swung out of its locking position in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the hame member, which is of the usual construction, on which is tted the metal face-plate B, which plate comprises a flat or body portion '(9, formed at its upper end with a horizontally-projected apertured ear o and at the lower end with a bearing portion b2, formed with a socket h3 aud a transverse recess bx, and such lower end terminates in apertured ear b4 to receive one of the fasteningscrews, as shown. About midway of its ends the face-plate has a pair of projecting apertured ears b5.
C indicates the pintle member-or bolt, which passes through the ears b b5 and enters the socket h3, and which when in its operative position has its upper end held lushwith the top of the ear o', as shown.
D indicates the chain-hook, and E the tugloop, each of which has its pivotal or ear portion de, respectively, slotted, as at d e. When either of' the said hook or loop members is fitted on the pintle, it may be set either above the upper ear b5, below the lower ear b5, between such ears, or fitted with its slot to embrace one of such ears, as shown most clearly in Fig. l.
It will be manifestly understood that to detach the tug-loop member E and substitute the chain-hook requires only the raising ofthe pintle O to a point above the connection of thetug-loop therewith. lIt will also be seen that by forming the lower end of the face plate B as 'shown a stop-bearing is provided for the pintle and also a means for attaching one of the harness-attaching rings G.
H indicates a swinging latch, which consists of the arm h,pivot.ed at the upper end on the front face of the hame and provided at the lower end with a shoe or angle member h', which when the latch is in the position shown in Fig. 1 tits closely overthe ear b', and thereby holds the pintle securely in place. When, however, such latch is swung back to the position shown in dotted lines in the drawings, the pintle can be readilylifted up and out of the ears b5.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the advantages of my improved devices will be readily understood, It will befobserved that by providing a latch device, as shown, the pintle is heldsecure in position, and yet capable of being almost instantly adjusted when it is desired to raise Or lower the loop orlhook member or substituting the loop for the hook member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
l. As an improvement in hame attachments, the combination with the haine A and the attached plate B, having apertured ears b b5 and the socket member b3 at the lower end of the bolt O held in the ears with its lower end seated in the socket b3 and having its upper IOO 1o adapted to be hung on the hame body having an outwardly extending horizontal member adapted when the latch is moved to its closed position to t over the upper end of the pintle and hold it in place, all arranged substantiallyas shown and for the purposes described. 15
