T. B. WYLIE.
METALLIG LATHING.
Patented Jan] 29, 1895 WITNESS S IIMTED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
THOMAS HARTLEY WYLIE, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB. OF
ONE-HALF TO JOHN FOLLANSBEE, OF SAME PLACE.
METALLIC LATHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,260, dated January 29, 1895.
Application filed December 4, 1893- Serial No. 492,675. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BARTLEY WY- LIE, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Lathing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-' Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lathing, one portion showing the method of cutting, and the other the expanded material. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line II-II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line IVIV of Fig. 3.
My invention relates .to the class of metallic laths, and is designed to produce an improved lath which will more efiectually hold the plaster in place without any auxiliary means, and enable a strip to cover more surface than formerly.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 shows clearly the method of cutting the strip to form the lath, the cuts being in the form of S-shaped zigzags 2, whose arms inclose each other, each cut terminating within the next zig-zag. After these cuts are made, the two opposite sides are seized and pulled apart, and. the lath shown in the lower part of Fig. 1 is formed,
each irregular aperture 4: having lockingprojections 5 and 6 on either side, formed at the ends of the intermediate arms 7 by the act of expanding. To more securely hold the plaster in place, I provide the concave longitudinal depressions or ribs 3 along each side of the series of irregular openings.
In the modification of Fig. 4:, the cuts are slightly different, being of rectangular form with one end open, the two sides of the adjacent open rectangles entering the open. end.
The advantages of the invention are apparent, since much more space is covered by the same strip than formerly, and the looking projections are formed in drawing apart without further work thereon.
Many variations other than that of Fig. 4 may be made in the form and arrangement of the cuts without departure from my invention.
I claim- 1. Sheet metal lathing having intermediate arms, each of such arms having at its ends laterally projecting extensions forming the curved ends of arms extending longitudinally from the intermediate arm; substantially as described.
2. Sheet metal lathing made in sections separated by corrugations, each section having intermediate arms provided on opposite sides at their ends with lateral extensions forming the bent inner ends of side arms extending parallel to the intermediate arm; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS BARTLEY WYLIE.
WVitnesses:
G. FOLLANSBEE, JOHN FOLLANSBEE.
