O HAUGER FERMENTING VAT.
No. 532,373. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.
STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
OHARLES HAUGER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
'FERMENTlNG-VAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters fatent No. 532,373, dated January 8, 1895.
I Application filed February 15, 1392. Renewed June 14-, 1894. Serial No. 514,610. (NomodeL) tion of-the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the 1 letters of reference marked thereon, which difierent figures of the drawings,
form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fermenting vats or tubs; and the objects of the invention areto produce devices attached to the fermenting vats for breweries, distilleries,
&c., by which the beer or equivalent, that is,
, as well-known to those familiar in the art,
now wasted, in drawing it off from the vat, can be saved instead of being wasted, as is now the case; also to make the devices more convenient to operate by the workmen, and to facilitate the letting the beer, &c., out of the vat, when filling it into barrels; also to facilitate the cleaning of 'the vat, by remov- ,ing all parts of the devices; furthermore to prevent the-spoiling of the yeast by exposure to the air as at present, which I accomplish by keeping the yeast covered by a film of beer; and finally to produce Very simple devices to open and close the outlet opening, and which can be produced at a very small expense.
With these objects inview, my invention consists in the construction of certain details, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters thereon.
Like letters indicate similar parts in the in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a fermenting vat with my improvements in position. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, partly broken away on one side, and the lever removed. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the valve operating rod, on an enlarged scale. Fig. represents detail sectional views of the bushing and valve seat.
In the drawings, A, represents an ordinary fermenting vat or tub, made of any suitable rubber, or equivalent washer e, against which the flange f. of the removable valve-seat O has its bearing. The seat 0 is provided with a screw thread and is screwed into the part BL It has two vertical pins 9., by which it can be withdrawn, when desired, by a transverse pin. 71. on the valve-operating rod D, to which the valve E is attached. The valve is in this instance of the plug form, although a disk or other suitable'valve may be employed. To the flange f a yoke F is secured, which forms a guide for the lower part of the rod D, and a bracket G near the upper part of the vat forms a guide above. A strainer H of suitable size and material is secured over the bushing, and it may be open at its top or closed, as desired, and it serves to prevent the escape of the yeast, which by being covered with the-beer, will gain in strength, while at the same time it will not spoil.
The operating rod D is preferably provided with a swivel I, which has two jaws, between which the lever K is pivoted by a pin z',having'a short chain on it, to prevent its being lost. The lever is provided with a slot, for the pin 11, to compensate for the movements of the lever, when opening and closing the valve.
A fulcrum 7c is secured to the upper edge of the vat, and the lever is preferably slightly bent upward, and has a small chain Z, rod, or its equivalent attached to it, by which the valve can be operated. I Said chain can be held by a hook mor pin on the outside of the vat, when the valve is open. A short crossrod or pin 11. serves to loosen the valve, if it should become stuck, or it is desired to grind the valve in its seat. Another small pin 0 may be employed, to prevent unauthorized persons from opening the valve. This pin 0 is preferably made of very taper form, so that;
it can -be easily removed and replaced.
The operation is as follows: WVhen the vat 1s to be emptied of the beer or other malt liquor, contained therein, the valve E is opened, by raising it out of its seat, and securing the chain Z to the hook m. The beer can then escape, until it is emptied out of the vat to the desired level above the yeast, when said valve is closed and the yeast is allowed to soak, thereby gaining in strength. It at any time, it is desired to thoroughly clean the vat, the valve, its seat and bushing, as well as the strainer and the operating rod are removed, and the operation can then proceed, the water freely escaping through the outlet openlng.
If desired, the bush B may be provided with a screw thread, to attach a hose coupling, a faucet,'or a cap to, as the necessity demands it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a fermenting vat A, to the bottom of which the bushing D is secured, for the removable seat 0, provided with the pins g. g. between and against which the pin h on the operating rod D, provided with, the valve E, acts, and by turning said rod at its upper end, serves to withdraw said valve seat, when desired.
2. The removable bushing B, containing the removable seat 0, provided with the pins g. g. in combination with the rod D having valve E 011 its lower end, and the swivel I at its upper end, to which the pivoted lever K is connected, all constructed as shown and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES I IAUGER.
