SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,212, dated January 8, 1.895?.
Application filed May 21. 1894. Serial No. 512,022. (No model.)
Iowa, have invented an Improved Shipping- Coop for Poultry, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a strong and durable coop for shipping and transporting poultry and the like that may readily and quickly be folded up when empty, into a compact form, so as to occupy a minimum of space for convenience in shipping when empty.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof whereby the desired objects are attained, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top view of the complete coop, showin g the one section thereof extended and the other side folded up. Dotted lines illustrate the position of the folded side when extended., Fig. 2 is an end view of the complete coop showing theone side open and the other in a closed position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the complete coop in an open position. Fig. 4 is a like view show-` ing the same closed, and Fig; 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.' Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the reference letter A is used to designate an upright partition having a solid strip A2 at its top and a like strip, A3 at its bottom, and the upright strips A4 at the ends thereof, thereby forming a rectangular frame about the partition. v
B-B indicate the sides of the coop, preferably formed of slats and having upright pieces B2 at their ends. These side pieces are connected with the central partition by means of the end pieces composed of two frames, C, and C2, the inner one, C, being hinged to the under pieces A4, and the outer one to the uprights B2, and hinged together at their meeting edges so as to be'capable of moving in-- wardly but not outwardly.
The top of the coop is composed of a slatted frame D, adapted, when in a horizontal position, to close the space between the side piece and the central partition, and between the two ends. It is hinged to the strip A2 at its inner edge, and is adapted to swing downwardly so as to lie parallel with the partition A when closed, and the bottom of the device indicated by the reference letter F, is of the same size as the top and hinged at its outer edge to the lower edge of the side piece B, and adapted to swing upwardly as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 to fold parallel with the side B: A spring actuated catch-is provided at B2 whereby the top may be held elevated.
H indicates a hook pivoted to the end piece A4, and H2 is a screw eye xed to the end piece B2 of the side B, and adapted to be engaged by said hook when the device is folded up.
J indicates a slide of the ordinary construction, located in the topfL D, through whichchickens may be passed to the interior of the coop.
J2 is a spring fixed to the top of the coop to engage the edge of the slide J and J 2 are notches in said edge adapted to receive said spring and hold the slide closed, or prevent its being drawn out from 'the top.
I designate the spring by the reference symbol J2 and the notches in the slide by J 3.
Both sides of the coop are exact counterparts and operate in the same manner so that it is thought unnecessary to describe more than one side thereof.
In practical operation when it is desired to fold the coop the top piece may be first folded downwardly to lie parallel with the central partition A as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The bottom pieceF may then be folded upwardly to lie 4parallel with the side B, as also indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 and Vthe end pieces may then be folded inwardly as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, to bring the side pieces and the central partition into close proximity. The hook H may then be placed in engagement with the screw eye H2 and the device firmly locked in a closed position.
Having thus described m'y invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, 1s-
An improved folding coop, comprising a rectangular central frame, two end pieces IOO hinged to swing inwardly at their central portions hinged to each end of said frame on opposite sides, rigid side pieces hinged to the ends of said end pieces, a bottom piece hinged to the lower edge of each side piece adapted to fold upwardly parallel with the side piece or to fold downwardly to rest upon the bottom of the central frame a top piece hinged to each side of the central frame at its top to fold downwardly, and when extended hori- 1o zontally to engage the inner surface of the end pieces, hooks for holding the tops in a horizontal position, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
