ALFRED J. G AU'IRAN, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT;
I BED-LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,461, dated December 25, 1894.
Application filed September 4| 1824:- Serial No. 522.009- (NO model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y Be it known that I, ALFRED J. GAUTRAN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Lounges; and I do hereby declarelthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its 'object to provideV an articlefof furniture of this class which shall serve perfectly as either a conch, sofa or bed, which shall be simple and inexpensive to produce, durable, not likely to get out of repair, which shall be perfectly firm and steady in any form in which it may be placed and in which the change from one form to 'another may be madequickly and easily byany person.
With these ends in view I have devised the novel bed-lounge of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specicatiom'numbers being used to'designate the several parts.
Figure l is a plan view showing the article in the closed position as a couch; Fig. 2, a similar view showing lthe sliding frame and parts carred'thereby drawn out but the movable bed frame not turned over; Fig. 3, an end view corresponding with Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an end view showing the article in position as a bed; Fig. 5, a section on aline indicated at :n in Fig. 2 the position of the parts however, corresponding to Fig. 4:; Fig. 6, a section on the line y y in Fig. 1 the detachable back being in position as when the article is used as a sofa, and Fig. 7 is a partial side elevation corresponding with'Fig. 1.
1l denotesthe frame the construction of which may be varied to suit the style of the article and the taste of the manufacturer andy which is provided with a recess 33 to receive the movable bed frame when in the closed position as will presently be fully explained. At the ends of the frame are slots 2 which are engaged by pins 3 on slides 4 which move in suitable ways at the ends of the frame. The slides themselves are provided with slots 5, preferably curved as shown in the drawings, which are engaged by pins or pivots 6 on the movable `bed frame 7. Pins 6 are placed cen- Y trally in the ends of the movable bed frame,
which in changing the article from a couch to a bed makes a half turn thereon, as will presently be fully explained.
8 denotes slides on the under side of the frame which are provided with slots 9 adapted to receive pins 10 extending from plates 1l which are themselvessecured to a laterally sliding bar 12. The movable bed frame is pivoted to this bar as at 13 the pivots being in line with pins 10. At the ends of bar 12 are arms 11..
15 denotes folding legs hinged to the under side of the movable bed frame as at 16.
17 denotes crank shaped brace rods. The
inner armsof these brace rods denoted specifcally by 17are pivoted in the ends of arms v14, the outer arms denoted specifically by 17b engaging slots 18 in folding legs 15.
The top of the frame is preferably upholstered as at 19 and the top of the movable bed frame is also upholstered as at 20. v
21 denotesa lightdetachable mattress which is adapted to cover the top of frame 1 and to be turned over the movable bed frame when the article is in the open position as in Figs. t and 5.
One half of mattress 21 is preferably secured to the movable bed frame in any sultable manner which will permit of ready detachmentl as for example by a lacing 22 which passes through eyes 23 upon the mattress and upon the movable bed frame. In the under side of the movable bed frame is a recess24 in which pillows and surplus bed clothing may be kept.
In practice ordinary light clothing may be left inthe made up position, that is lying upon the top of mattress 21 and may be folded up with the mattress so that when the article is changed from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the bed IOO hinged to a block 27 as at 28, see Fig. 7, so as I t0 swing in the vertical plane and which serves as ahead piece when the article is used as a couch as in Figs. 1, 2, 6 and 7 and as a bolster when the article is used as a bed as in Figs. 4 and 5, the two parts of the bolster being hinged together as at 29 so as to permit it to fold up to form an upholstered head for the couch and to be opened out as in Figs. 4 and 5 to form a bolster for the bed.
30, see Fig'. 6, denotes a detachable back which is used when it is desired to use the article as a sofa. In practice this back is made in two parts which are hinged together for convenience in storing when not in use and is provided at its lower end with arms 3l which engage eyes 32 upon the back ofthe frame.
The operation is as follows: Suppose the article to be in the closed position as in Figs. 1 and 6. rlhe operator removes the detachable back if it has been in place and also removes the curtain, not shown except in Fig. 7, from the front of the frame. He then draws out the movable bed frame and with it slides 4 and 8 as in Figs. 2 and 3. As soon as these parts have been drawn out the folding bed frame is given a half turn on its pivots as in Figs. 4 and 5 the frame turning readily on pivots 6 and 13 as already described. As the bed frame is turned over folding legs 15 will be carried down to their operative position as in Figs. 4 and 5 by means of crank shaped brace rods 17 the inner arms of which are pivoted to arms 14 and the outer arms of which engage slots 18 in the folding legs. As soon as the movable bed frame is given the half turn already described these crank arms will carry the legs down to place and will retain them there, and when the movable bed frame is turned over again for the purpose of closing up the bed as in Fig. 3 the crank arms will themselves draw the folding legs up into the closed position. Having turned over the folding bed frame and dropped the legs to position the operator lifts up the two part bolster turning it on its hinges 28 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7 and then spreads out mattress 21 and the bed covering with it should the latter be in place the upper end of the inner half of the mattress passing under the double bolster after which the double bolster is then allowed to drop back to place. The operator then opens out the double bolster turning the upper part on hinges 29 as indicated in Figs.4 and 5. The pillows are then placed upon the bolster and the bed is ready for use. When it is desired to fold up the bed again the pillows are removed and the two part bolster folded upon itself as in Figs. 1 and 2. The half of the mattress and with it the bed clothing if preferred that has rested upon the top of the frame is turned over upon itself so that both halves of the mattress rest upon the movable bed frame, straps 34 or other suitable catches being provided to hold the mattress in place. See Fig. 3. The movable bed frame is then turned upon its pivots as in Fig. 3 and the frame and slides are pushed back into recess 33 inthe frame. The curtain is then placed in position and the article may be used as a couch or a sofa.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination with aframe havinga recess 33 and slides 4 and 8, of a laterally sliding bar connected to slides 8, a movable bed frame pivoted to slides 4 and to the laterally sliding bar and adapted to make a half turn on its pivots, and legs hinged to the movable bed frame and adapted to be moved into position to support the movable bed frame when the latter is turned to position for use as a bed.
2. The combination with a frame having a recess 33 and slots 2 in its ends, slides 4 having pins 3 engaging said slots and provided with slots 5, and slides 8 having slots 9, of a laterally sliding bar having plates 11 carrying pins 10 engaging slots 9 a movable bed frame pivoted t@ slides 8 and having pins 6 engaging slots 5 so that said frame may be given a halt turn upon the slides by which it is carried legs hinged to the movable bed frame and crank shaped brace rods by which the legs are moved to operative position when the movable bed frame is turned.
3. The combination with the frame having a recess 33 and slides 4 and 8, of a laterally sliding bar connected to slides 8, and sliding,r independently thereof, said bar being provided with arms 14, a movable bed frame pivoted to slides 4 and to the laterally sliding bar, legs hinged to the movable bed trame and having slots 18 and crank shaped brace rods whose inner arms engage arms 14 and whose outer arms engage slots 13 so that when the movable bed frame is turned upon its pivots the crank arms will throw the folding legs downward into position to support the outer edge of the movable bed frame.
4. The combination with the frame having a recess 33, a movable bed frame adapted to be received in said recess and to makea half turn on pivots when drawn out and suitable legs for supporting it in the open position, ot' mattress 2l adapted to cover the frame -and the movable bed frame and means as a 1acing and eyes for detachably securing tho mattress to the movable bed frame, so that in use it will pass with the latter into the recess.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED J. GAUTRAN.
