SYECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,189, dated December l8, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that LOALVIN A. HUTcHINsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spencer, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Ele- &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for elevating barrels on their ends, and moving them from place to place.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device or apparatus of the above description, which shall be simple in construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus as it appears, when not in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the first step in the operation of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the barrel partly tilted. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the barrel set on end .on the apparatus, and ready to be elevated. Fig. 5 is a similar view, showing the upper platform and barrel elevated.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates two parallel longitudinal beams to which is secured a platform 2. To the corners of this platform, are secured blocks 3, in which are pivoted double casters 4, which with the platform and beams form a carriage or truck. Upon the lower side of this platform are staples 5, through which the operating lever, hereinafter described, passes. Near the'ends of the platform are hinged transverse boards 6, which are also hinged to an upper platform 7, having hooks 8 at its sides. The boards 6, at their vided with eye-bolts 9, with which engage hooks 10, pivoted to the lower platform 2. The upper side of the upper platform is proends are pro videdwith a circular hub 7, with which the 5 chine of the lower end of the barrel engages whereby the latter is held in place on the platform.
The numeral 12 designates a lever having a notch or groove 13 in its lower end, and intermediate of its ends is provided with a hooked bracket 14,-with which is connected a chain 15,-the links of one end of which are adapted to engage with the hooks 8. One of these links is also provided with a hook l6, 6 which is adapted to engage with the chine of a barrel.
Theoperation is as follows: The apparatus is moved up to the barrel to be ended and elevated, and one end is elevated or raised to 6 the position shown in Fig. 2, the upper platform resting against one of the barrel heads, and the hook l6 engaging with the chine at the other end. By now depressing the lever the apparatus will assume a horizontal posi- 7 tion, as seen in Fig. 4, with the barrel setting on end on the upper platform. The lever is now withdrawn from the staples on the lower platform, and the hook disengaged from the barrel chine and the links at each end engaged with the hooks on the sides of the upper platform. The notched end of the lever is now engaged with the rear edge of the lower platform, as seen in Fig. 4. Bynow depressing the lever, the upper platform and barrel will 8 be elevated to the position shown in Fig. 5, and the hooks 10, engaged with'the eye-bolts 9.
From the above it will be seen, that a barrel can be readily and easily set on end without any danger of soiling the clothing of the person operating the apparatus. The barrel can also be movedfrom place to place, as may be found convenient or desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a barrel truck, the combination with the carriage, of the transverse boards hinged thereto, and the upper platform hinged to said boards, provided with a circular hub on its upper side, substantially as described. 9
