WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent 1%. 531,965, datedDecember 18,1894.
Application filed eptember 22,18 94. iSerial No. 523,774. (N 0 model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX RUBIN,of New York city, in the county and 'State of New -York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Writing-Tablets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
My invention relates to an improvement in writing tablets, portfolios and-similar articles, and it has for its object to provide a means wherebyapad or table may be expeditiously and conveniently reversed while in hinged connection with the body of the tablet proper, the supports for the tablet being so constructed as to be entirely concealed when the tablet or table is in either its open or its closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinged connection between the tablet proper and the pad or table, which will be exceedingly simple, durable and economic, and capable of expeditious application to the framework of the tablet.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,
and pointed out in the claims.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a writing tablet illustrating the pad as in its closed position, in which position the pad serves as a cover only for the tablet proper. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the pad reversed, or'i'n position to beused for writing purposes. 7 tablet with the table or pad broken away, showing thesupport therefor. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is atransverse section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. 7
In carrying out the invention the frame or body A of the tablet may be of any desired shape, and is made to comprise preferably a base board 10, Sideboards 11 projecting upward from the base, a front board 12 and a back board 13, and adjacent to the back board, within the body or frame, suitable Fig. 3 is a planview of the writing.
compartmentsmay be constructed, as for ex ample, a compartment 14. to accommodate an ink-stand, and a compartment 15, adapted to receive loose pens and other articles used in writing. A large compartment 16 is located between the sides 11, the front board 12 and the partition 17 forming the forward wall of the pen and ink-stand compartments 14 and 15. Within the large compartment 16 suitable pockets 18 are usually located to receive writing paper, envelopes and pen-holders, for example, and as shown in Fig. 3, this large compartment is adapted to be closed or covered by a pad or table B, which may be of any desirable or'suitable material, but said pad or table is preferablyfinished upon one side substantially in accordance with the finish of "the frame proper, while upon its other side it is provided with means, for example, corner pockets 19, adapted to receive a blotting pad 20, or the equivalent thereof.
The main feature of this invention relates to the manner in which the table or pad is supported, and the manner in which the supports are concealed when the pad or table is in either its cover position or in the position to receive writing paper, or in position for use as a support for writing material.
Ordinarily the side pieces 11 upon their inner faces are cut away longitudinally, forming thereby recesses 21, as shown in Fig. 3;
and parallel with each side piece a strip or bar 22 is located, secured to the base of the body, or otherwise attached thereto, and the strips or bars 22 are of less height than the side pieces 11, being adapted as supports for thepad or table when in either of its two po- 'Sition's.
A' bearing 23 is secured to the rear or outer end of each of the bars or strips 22, as shown in Fig. 4, and in each bearing the crank extremity 24 of a substantially yoke hinge O is ,journaled, the bow portion 25 of the said yoke hinge being pivotally attached in any approved manner to one face of the'pad or table B preferably at the center, and this bow portion extends from side .to side of the pad, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The leg members 26 of the hinge extend from each end of the bow section at right angles thereto, and the crank extremities 23 of the hinge are formed at the rear or outer ends of the said leg mem- -l A rnNr OFFICE.
here. by causing the material of which the hinge is made to be carried upward at a right angle from the leg members, and then horizontally preferably in direction of each other; and where the forward or inner ends of the leg members connect with the bow sections or members 25 of the hinge, the material of which the hinge is made is carried upward, forming a crank for the connecting portion 26 thus produced, as shown in Fig. 2, being at right angles to both the leg members or sections and the bow member or section. Under such a construction it will be observed that when the pad or table is closed down upon the frame or body of the writing tablet, the leg members or sections of the hinge will have entered the recesses 21 in the side pieces, or the space intervening between the recessed portions of the side pieces and the supporting strips or bars 22, as shown in Fig. 4. Therefore the hinge is rendered invisible. The hinge is held within the said recesses 21, or the said spaces, by keepers 27, which may be of any approved construction. Preferably, however, the said keepers consist of studs which are entered into the inner faces of the sides 11 of the frame or body at or near the forward ends of their recessed portions 21, theleg members of the hinge being sprung past the said studs.
In operation, supposing the pad to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which it is employed simply as a cover for the large compartment 16, and it is desired to use the tablet for writing purposes, the pad is lifted up at its front or inner end until the hinge is in substantially a vertical position, or a position at right angles to the body, whereupon the pad is turned upon the hinge, bringing what was its under face uppermost. The pad is then dropped downward once more to a bearing upon the supporting strips or bars 22, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the under face of the pad, or that which is adapted to support the paper to be written upon, will be uppermost; and in either of these two positions the hinge of the pad will be perfectly concealed, and the change in position may be expeditiously and conveniently eltected.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a case and a cover or pad therefor, of a double hinge connected with the cover or pad, at or near its center and likewise connected with the case at or near one end of the compartment to be covered, and a keeper adapted to hold the. hinge in a closed position yet admit of release upon an upward movement of the. hinge, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with acaseand a cover or pad for said case, of a double hinge connected with the cover or pad at or near its The crank extremities 23 are formed center, and likewise connected with the case at or near oneend of the compartment to be covered, the side members of the hinge being adapted to enter a recess between the cover and the body of the case when the cover is in horizontal position or substantially so, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the case of a writing tablet or equivalent article, the said case being provided with recesses in its side portions, and a cover or pad adapted to close a receptacle in the case, of a hinge comprising a bow section upon which the cover or pad is fulcrumed between its ends, and leg sections located at an angle to the bow section, each leg section terminating in a crank arm and having a crank connection with the bow section, and means, substantially as described, for pivoting the crank arms at the extremities 'of the hinge to the casing adjacent to the recesses therein, whereby the cover may be reversed, and when closed the leg sections of the hinge will be concealed in the recessesin the casing, as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with the casing of a writing tablet, or like article, provided with recesses at opposite sides of a compartment contained in the casing, and a cover or pad adapted to close the said compartment, of a yoke-shaped hinge comprising a bow member pivotally connected with the cover or pad at or near its center, and leg sections located at opposite sides of the cover or pad, being con nected with the bow section by connecting rods located at substantially a right angle to both the bow and leg sections, each leg section terminating at its extremity in a crank arm, and sockets locatti adjacent to the recesses in the said case, in which the crank arms of the hinge are mounted to turn, as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with the casing of a writing tablet, or like article, provided with recesses at opposite sides of a compartment contained in the casing, and a cover or pad adapted to cover the said compartment, of a yoke-shaped hinge comprising a bow member pivotally connected with the cover or pad at or near its center, and leg sections located at opposite sides of the cover or pad, being connected with the bow section by connecting rods located substantially at a right angle to both the bow and leg sections, each leg section terminating at its extremity in a crank arm, sockets located adjacent to the recesses in the said case in which the crank arms of the hinge are mounted to turn, and keepers adapted to hold the leg sections of the hinge concealed in the recesses of the case when the pad or cover is over the compartment therein, as and for the purpose set forth.
