NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lJOSEPH LYMAN PRENTISS, OF CAON CITY, COLORADO.
BATHING APPLIANCE. l
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 539,301, dated May 14.-, 1895. Application filed July 16,11894-1, Serial No. 517,713. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPn LYMAN PREN- TISs, of Oaon Oity,in the countyof Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented a new such body, while submerged under water, the
impact of these pressure-jets, creates a peculiar, and very gratifying sensation, having all the evidence of generating and carrying with it, a strong electric current which penetrates the body. It further causes a speedy and free circulation of the blood in that portion of the body undergoing treatment, and the moving about of the jets besides, imparts a thorough kneading action which is much more even and gentle than if the same manipulation were done by hand.
For the purpose of applying my discovery in the best mechanical manner, I constructy what I term a water pressure massage head, which'is essentially a hollow cylindrical apparatus having means for water admission at one point, and awater discharge diaphragm, which diaphragm is provided with a greater or less number of small openings or passages, and such openings for ordinary purposes I prefer to make plain, round passages of Va length of about two and a half times the diameter of the holes, so as to form a series of v small nozzles having the maximum mechanical effect; but I do not confine, or limit myself to the particular shape of the jets yor pressure head. For instance, the jet openings may be made of a shape similar to a rifle twist, in order to give each jet of water an independent revolving action, thus creating a more vigorous and searching contact with the body under treatment.
I hereby disclaim distinctly any of the various sprinkling or showerrbath appliances which are used to project water spray against the body, when said body is not submerged. For the purpose of my bath appliance, it is essential that the water be projected from the pressure head under water against the body, likewise under water; and it is further essen- -tial that a high pressure be'employed which in practice I find to be best at about fty pounds per square inch.
The device is particularly well adapted for forcing mineral waters into contact with the body, for the treatment of rheumatism and other diseases.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a side elevation of my improved device as -applied to a hose. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The device is provided with a hollow head 10, which is preferably of cylindrical shape, l
-means of an ordinarycoupling 16 which, as
illustrated, is provided with a roughened ring 17 to enable it to be conveniently tightened. I have shown this particular hose coupling to illustrate an operative connection between the hose and the head 10, but it will be understood that any couplingmay be used suitable for the purpose, without departing from the principle of the invention.
` In the head is a series of nozzles 18, whichA open through the end 11 thereof, and in a portion of these nozzles are placed screw plates 19, that is, plates which are twisted to form screws, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, andthe agreeable boring motion against the body ofv the person. The Water is forced through the head under a very heavy pressure, and the head is held under water so that the body must also be immersed in order that the device may play upon it with the proper eleet. Having thus described my invention, I
'claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patentl. A bathing appliance, comprising the hollow head or body provided with an inlet and having a series of internal nozzles, the outlet or discharge ends of which are flush with the outlet ends of the head or body.
2. Abathing appliance, com prising the hollow head or bod-y provided with an inlet and a series of internal nozzles, the outlet or discharge ends of which are flush with the outlet .end ot' the head or body, and axially twisted flat strips in said nozzles with their longitudinal edges engaging the walls of the nozzles, substantially as described.
3. A bathing appliance, comprising the hol? low cylindrical head havinga removable cap on its upper end, a lateral inlet and coupling, and a series of internal nozzles in the head With their outlet ends iiush with the bottom thereof, substantially as described.
,JOSEPH LYMAN PRENTISS.
