To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL SroNER, of Chicago, in the county of' Cook and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved Button-Hole for Paper Collars and Cuffs 5 and I do hereby decla-re that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and iigures marked thereon, which form part of this specifica-tion.

The nature of my said invention consists in constructing the button-hole large enough at one end to allow the button to pass through without compressing or breaking the material of which the collar or cuftis made, with a similar, though smaller, enlargement at the other end of' the button-hole, to allow the eye or thread by which the button may be fastened to the collar, or the post of the stud, to rest therein, while the button cannot pass through, said two enlargements at the ends of the button-hole being connected by a slit, with convex sides, approaching near to each other at the middle, but curving gradually out, and merging or coalescin g with the outlines of' the said enlargements at the point of'junetion with the same.

My said invention has particular reference to collars and cuffs made of' thick, heavy cardboard paper, or paper having sufficient firm ness and stability of texture, so that the inward swell at the middle ofthe said slit in the button-hole will resist the tendency, under certain circumstances, ofthe button to move back toward the large end of the button-hole and keep the collar or cuff securely fastened.

To enable those skilled in the art to linderstand how to construct and make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawing, in which- Figurel represents a plan or top View of' my invention.

A represents the enlargement at that end of the button-hole through which the button is introduced orput through; B, the smalleropening for the eye of the button or post of' the stud; and C, the narrow neck or slip connecting the same, having curved sides approaching each other at the point between the aforesaid enlargements.

By this construction ot' the slitthe edges or lips, at the point of their nearest approach to each other, will yield enough, upon pressure, to allow the eye of the button or thread by which it is secured to the'opposite end of the collar to pass through into the opening B, while there is stability and firmness in the material to prevent the return of the same into the opening A. Thus for collars and cuf'f's` made of thick, substantial paper or card-board this invention is important and almost indispensable, although for metal collars, or those made of thin, flexible material, it would he ot' no advantage whatever'.

The features which constitute my invention, and give it its value for the purpose i'or which it is designed, are the large and small openings at each end, varying in size in accordance with the purpose of each, and the peculiar slit connecting them, as and t'or the purposes specified. Hence,

I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a button-hole for cardboard paper collars and cuffs, or collars and cuf'f's of' any similar material, of the enlargements A and B, proportioned as specified, and the peculiarly-constructed slit connecting` the saine, all arranged and operating substantially as specified and shown.
