HOOK AND EYE FOR GARMENTS.

Be it known that I, EMMA M. D. LANDEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes for Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plate forming the eye of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hook of the device. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the hook and eye connected with each other and attached to a garment, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hook and eye connected with each other and disconnected from a garment.

This invention relates to certain improvements in hooks and eyes for garments, which lmprovements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 represents a flat metal plate stamped so as to out two parallel slits or openings through its body so as to leave between said openings a strip or tongue D connected at each end with said plate and formed so as to have the curves or bends a, c, was shown, and forminga spring to act in conjunction with a tongue, to prevent the tongue from becoming disconnected from the eye when in use. Said tongue is depressed between its ends so as to be on a lower plane from the plate A to permit the hook to pass in between the said plate and its said tongue. The edges of said plate adjacent to said tongue are turned upward and away from said tongue as shown at B to form guides for the hook as it enters the throat between said edges.

The book is formed as shown in Fig. 2, of a flat piece of metal, and consists of the fiat plate or bar E having the arm F extending at right angles from its side, at aboutits center, and having the swell or widened portion H, and curved to conform to the curves of the tongue D of the eye A. X

It is intended that the eye plate A shall be sewed to the edge of a garmentJ as shown in Fig. 3, and it is provided with thread holes as shown for that purpose, and that the hook shall be attached to an opposite edge of a garment G by first passing its part F through the cloth so the plate or barE will lie in the fold of the cloth as shown-in Fig. 3, and then by sewing the extending end of the part F to the garment, so that there will be no loose ends of the hook to catch on a garment or other clothing of the wearer. Said bar or plate E being located within the fold or hem of the garment will hold the garment or cloth out forward of the hook, so that no parts of the hook or eye will show when hooked together and being worn, and also said bar or plate prevents a long bearing against; the cloth, and prevents it from being torn by'the hook, or the hook from coming loose or detached from the garment.

In operation, the hook and eye having been attached to their respective parts of the garment, the arm F of the hook is introduced between the guides B, of the plate A, and then moved toward the inner end of the throat over the tongue D until the wider portion II of said arm has its edges pass under the plate A at either side of said tongue, and between said tongue and plate, and is locked in the angle between said plate and tongue at the inner end of said throat, where it is held from rearward movement by means of its curves registering with those of said tongue, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: I

1. The hook and eye herein described consisting of the eye A formed of a flat metal plate having the curved spring tongue D attached to said plate at each end, and depressed between its ends to be on a different plane from said plate, the walls of said plate adjacent to the sides of said tongue forming guides and a throat for the hook, in combination with a hook formed of flat metal and consisting of the bar or plate E having the arm F extending at right angles from its side, and having the swell or widened portion H, and curved to conform to the curves of said tongue substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a hook and eye, the hook consisting m fiat metal plate A having thetongue D provided with the crimps or bends a, c, z, and having each end attached to the said plate, and the edges of said plate adjacent to said tongue forming a guide and threat for a tongue or hook substantially as and for the I5 purpose set forth.
