Description

R. LAMBERT.
Hand-Seeder.
Patented Apr y10 1866 No. 5228558v lIl! WRI PETERS, PH0To-L|THoGRAvu:R WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATESA PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD LAMBERT, OF CORTLAND VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,3, dated April 10, 1866.
To all whom tit may concern- Be it known that I, RICHARD LAMBERT, of Cortland Village, Cortland county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the internal structure.
In the different figures the same letters refer to identical parts.
My invention relates to that class of hand seed-planters where the seed-case is attached to the handle of an ordinary hoe.
A is the handle of an ordinary hoe. To this is attached a box, B, of tin or other suitable material, by means ofa loop, D, through which the handle passes, and which may then be drawn tightly against the openings in the case through hich it passes by the thumb-screw D', the base of which works on the plate C. The seed is admitted by the opening E, which is secured by a cap.
In the bottom of the case B is a slide, Gr, working through an opening left for the purpose in the end ofthe case. This slide is actuated by a wire, F, and the spiral springs l I, or their equivalents. There is a double bottom, M M', in the case, and between these the slide G works. Through this slide is cut the slot K K', square at the end K' and rounded at the end K, to adapt it to the holes N and N' through the double bottom. These holes are not on the same line, but are separated, so as to occupy a little more space than their joint diameters.
In the slot K K' is inserted the block H, which is fastened by a screw cut on the end of the wire or rod F, so that the block H may be y approached to or withdrawn from the end K of the slot, so as to adapt the space left in the slide to the varying size of corn or other seed. It being necessary to plant in each hill the same number of grains, and grains of corn varying very greatly in size, this adaptation is necessar Around the holes in the case B through which the handle passes I place wires L, over which the tin is turned, thus preventing injury to the case from the handle.
In operating with my hand seed-planter it may be attached to the handle of any hoe by the means described. It should be set at such distance from the blade of the hoe that when the blade is struck in the side of the hill to cover the corn the opening N' will be over the center of the hill. The case being filled with grains of corn and the block H adjusted to the sizes, so as to hold the number of grains intended to be planted, when the hoe is placed as described, the grains, passing through the hole N, will h'll the space in the slide. Then by pulling with the tinger the wire F passing up the handle, the slide closes the opening N and opens the lower one, N', through which the seeds drop. This motion is shown by the red lines, Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with the slide G and rod F, the adjustable block H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the case B with the double bottom M M', the slide G, rod F, and spiral springs I I, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD LAMBERT.
