NI'TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DUSTAN A. PAGE AND GEORGE Z. CRUZEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; SAID CRUZEN ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CHARLES W. FAIRRING- TON, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING COT oR BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 537,30 5, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed March 21, 1894. Serial No. 504,508. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Y Be it known that we, DUSTAN A.' PAGE and GEORGE Z. CRUZEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or Collapsible Cots or Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in 1o cots or bed-bottoms; and consists in certain peculiarities .of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation ofthe various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
1'5 The objects of our invention are, first, to provide a cot or bed-bottom, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, yet effective in operation and satisfactory inservice; second, such a cot or bed-bottom, in which zo the parts thereof are so constructed that it will be especially adapted to bottoms made of woven wire, cords, or other suitable, flexible material, which flexible bottom may be stretched taut, and held in such a position under very great weight; and third, a cot orbed-bottom the parts of which may be readily united or disconnected, and may be folded together into a compact form or package occupyinga minimum amount of space, thus econo- 3o niizing in the cost of shipping or storage.
to which our invention pertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe it, referring tothe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of our cot, showing it in position ready for the bed-clothes and to be occupied. Fig. 2, is a View in side elevation of the cot inverted, showing in con- 40' tinuous lines, the legs, head and foot-board thereof folded down, and by dotted lines, the position the parts willoccupy when the frame is being connected or disconnected, Ypreparatory to being folded together. Fig. 3, is a bottom plan view of the cotshowing a portion of the frame folded together, in order that it may be formed into a small package, and apart only of the flexible bottom or woven-Wire. Fig. 4, is an end View of the cot or bed-bottom 5o in a collapsed condition, showing it formed or gagement.
rolled into a small package. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of a portion of one part of one of the side-rails of the frame, showing its socket orjoint plates-secured thereto. Fig. 6, is a like View of the other part of said rail, showing its joint plates secured thereto. Fig. 7, is a view in side elevation of one of the joint plates used on one part of the side-rails. Fig. 8, is a similar view of the socket or joint-plates kused on the other part of the side-rail, and 5o showing by dotted lines, the two plates in en- Fig. 9, is a sectional View, taken on line 9, 9, of Fig. S, ofone ofthe socket-plates; and Fig. 10, is a perspective View of a portion of the frame, and a part of the flexible-bottom, showing the manner of securing the same thereto.
Similar letters refer to like parts through` out the different views of the drawings.
The siderails of the frame or bed-bottom 7o. are made of two pieces or sections A, and B, which are preferably made of wood, and usually rectangular in shape, to the outer surface and near the outer ends of which are pivotally secured the vbraces or end-pieces a, which serve the double purpose of uniting the side-rails of the frame and of securing the flexible bottom or wire-fabric C, at its ends.
As is clearly shown in Figs. l, 2, and lO, o-f
, the drawings, the braces a, are formed of two 8o Invorder to enable others skilled in the artV pieces placed one on the other, and are firmly secured together by means of bolts or rivets or otherwise, thus clamping the flexible-bottom or fabric C, between them and affording a very secure and inexpensive means of retaining the same in` position. To the outer edge of each of the braces a, is secured a piece a to which the head-board a2, and foot-board the plate D, adjacent tothe plate E', is formed roo with a rectangular shoulder d, against which fitsa similarly formed shoulder c, ou the upper portion of the plate E', when the said plates are in engagement. As shown the cam-sockel; or groove D', is provided with a somewhat flaring mouth d', in order to allow ot the easy insertion or removal of the cam-projection E, and is provided with a coveringr d2, which prevents the lateral dislocation of the cam-pro jection, as is obvious. To the outer surfaces of the side-rails of the cot, are pivotally secured near each end thereof, supporting legs c, which may be folded to the sides ofthe sidepieces, as shown in Fig. 2, and are prevented from accidental closing, by means of the springs or stops c attached to the side-rails near the supporting-legs. By placing the pieces composing the braces a, one on the other, We attain greater strength thereby, and it is obvious that as the ends of the wovenwire or flexible-bottom are placed between said pieces, that it is not necessary to have the fabric or bottom squat-ed, as is ordinarily the case. The flexible-bottom C, is then placed over the upper piece of the brace, in which position it will be iirmly held, by reason of the contact with the upper and lower edges of the said upper piece.
As shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings, the pieces A, and B, forming the side-rails ot' the bottom are provided with a number ot' holes ZJ, through which maybe passed the pivot-pin b', to secure them to the brace-pieces c. We provide the pieces with a number of holes, so that if after long use, the flexible bottom should be stretched,so as to sag, it can again be made taut by placing the pivot-pin in the outer holes in the side-pieces, which will thereby lengthen the distance between the braces or end-pieces.
The operation of our device, is simple and as follows: The pieces B, are placed parallel with each other, and in an inverted position, as shown in Fig. 2,of the drawings, when the pieces A, having on their inner ends the cam* projections E, may be united with the pieces B, by inserting the projections in the sockets D, of the plates D, as shown by dotted lines in the last named figure, when by pressing the pieces A, down, the cam shapes of the groove D', and projections E, will act as a lever and will cause the flexible bottom to be stretched tant, when the pieces A, are brought into alignment with the pieces B, after which the bottom may be turned over to occupy the position shown in Fig. l, when they will bo firmly locked and will resist great weight. When it is desired to fold the cot or bed-bottom for shipping or storage, the parts may bc separated by raising the pieces A, and disengaging them from the pieces B, after which they may be turned to the transverse positions, indicated in Fig. 3, of the drawings, when they may be rolled toward each other and inwrapped by the flexible bottom forming a very small and com pact package, which is illustrated in Fig. 4, of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be seen and readily understood that our invention is applicable to a bed-bottom, as well as a cot, and by simplyomitting the supporting-legs and head and foot-boards, may be applied to a bed-stead of the ordinary construction.
Having thus fully described our invention,
whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iis- 1. In a folding-c0t or bed-bottoni the combination of the end-braces composed of tivo pieces placed one on the other, with the sectional side-rails pivotally secured thereto, the plates D, having the cam-shaped sockets sccured'to the innerendsot one pairot' the sections of the side-rails, the plates E', having the cam-shaped projections, and secured to the inner ends of the other pair of sections ofthe side-rails, and the flexible bottom over-lapping the upper pieces ofthe braces and having its ends interposed between the pieces thereof, substantially as described.
2. Inafoldiug-cot Orbed-bottom, the combination with the end-rails a, ofthe sections A, and B, of the side-rails pivotally secured thereto, the plates D, having the caxn-shaped sockets D', and shoulders d, secured to the sections A, the plates E', having the camshaped projections E, and shoulder e, secured to the sections B, and the flexible bottom C, secured to the end-pieces or braces, substantially as described.
