lNiPROVED PIPING FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,699, dated April 3, 1866.

`iinishing the upper or top edges of boots and shoes; and it consists in forming the piping ot' a strip or piece of leather or other suitable material folded in such a manner as to have a rounded edge, or nearly so.

In accompanying plate ot' drawings my improved piping is illustrated, of which- Figures l and 2 are both side views ot' the same, the latter on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 a transverse section taken in the plane ot' the line a: w, Fig. 2.

Similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the manufacture of my improved piping or binding, I take a stri p of leather, A, of any suitable kind and color, or of any other suitable material of the requisite width-say about three-tourt hs of an inch, and of any lengthwhich strip of leather is then passed in and between two revolving rolls, foldin g it over as it passes between them, which rolls are to be otl such a form as to impart to the said leather strip at its folded edge a around shape, or nearly so, as shown in Fig. 3, thus producing a new article ot' manufacture1 to be used in the place ot' the ordinary folded leather binding' or piping (so called) for the trimming or finishing ot" the edges ot' boots and shoes, my new piping far exceeding the old style ot` similar piping in beauty and elegance ot' appearance and neatness in finish.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article ot manufacture, a piping or bindingtorbootsandshoeshavingarounded edge, or nearly so, substantially as described.
