J. W. KRANK.
COMBINED SGISSORS, PUNUH, AND WIRE CUTTER. No. 536,086.
Patented Mar. 19, 1895.
Inventor:
I UNITED STATES PATENT stuns.
JOSEPH W. KRANK, OF-ALBION, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SCISSORS, PUNCH,- AND WIRE-CUTTER.-
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,086, dated March 19, 1895;
Application filed March 19; 1894.
To all whom it'may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. KRANK, a citizen of the United States, residingat Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Scissors, Punch, and Wire-Cutter; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to combined scissors, punch, and wire'cutters, and seeks to provide certain improvements on the device shown in Letters Patent No. 464,075, granted to me December 1, 1891; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed. f
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a tool provided with my improvements with apart broken, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the pivot.
The basis of my invention consists of a pair. of scissors having cutting blades, A, B, in advance of their pivot, and having their handles constructed to form a button hole cutter D. substantially as shown in my said former patent, No. 464,075. The circular enlargements of the blades around their pivot are provided with notches E forming a wire cutter, and the outer faces of the blades A and D are provided with scale measures, as shown.
One of the blades, A, is provided in advance of the pivot with a hollow cutting punch G, having its cutting edge projecting from the inner edge of the blade, and adapted to strike against a flat die formed by a suitable plate F projecting from the pivotal section of the blade B, the inner face of the said plate F being parallel with the adjacent outer edge of the blade B and inner edge of the blade A, as shown in the accompanying drawings. An opening is provided in the blade A at the rear of the punch G to allow the escape of the pieces out out. By arranging the punch in advance of the pivot I- secure the advan- Serial-No. 504,327. on model.)
tage of the leverage given by the handles in stead of relying on direct pressure as heretofore.
In order to adjust the play of the button hole cutter D and thereby regulate the length of the button hole, I mount in one of the members of the tool in the rear of the pivot a set-screw H which extends inward toward a suitable cam I formed on the other member of the tool around the pivot, as shown in the drawings. When the set-screw H is turned inward the cam will bind on the end of the screw and thereby stop the movement of the handles toward each other; and it is therefore obvious that by properly adjusting the set-screw the button hole cutter may be easily and quickly regulated.
The blades are'pivotally secured by means of a pivot pin 0 having a round flat head adapted to fit in a counter-sunk recess in the side of one of the blades and thereby take the wear otf the body of the pin. of the pin is provided with an angular por-- tion J which engages an angular opening in the other blade so that the pin will turn with said blade; and beyond the said angular por-' tion the pin is provided with a threaded extremity upon which is mounted a nut adapted to be turned home against the blade.-
.' Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A tool of the character shown and described having a die plate projecting from the pivotal section of one of its blades in ad vance of the pivot, and having its other blade provided with a cutting punch adapted to strike against said die plate, substantially as specified.
2. In a tool of the character shown and described, the combination of the blades A B, cutting punch G, die plate F, cam I, set-screw H, and pivot pin 0, all arranged and constructed as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W, KRANK.
