Description
(No Model.) M. BRETHERTON.
CUTTER 0R. TRIMMER FOR SHADES, .&c-.
' No.-535,19'1. Patented Mar. 5, 1-895.
W/ TN E SSE S:
Nrrnn STATES as KR FFCE MARTIN BRETHERTON, OF HADDONFIELD, NEV JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,191, dated March 5, 1895.
Application filed December 23, 1893. Serial No. 494,534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN BRETHERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddonfield, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gutters or Trimmers for Shades, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a cutter or trimmer formed of a base and a movable stock, with an interposed spring or springs, a blade on said stock and guides for the device, the construction and operation of parts being hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cutter or trimmer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section thereof on line as, as, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the base of the cutter, and B designates a vertically-moving stock which is supported on springs O, the latter being secured to the base A.
Rising from the ends and sides of the base A are boxes D, which are open from above, and freely receive the corresponding portions of the stock A, the sides of the boxes having vertical slots E to receive the screws F which enter the stock, whereby the stock and base are connected, the stock is guided in its rising and falling motions, and said stock is limited in its ascent.
Depending from and secured to the stock at or about the center thereof are presser feet and ends G, which pass freely through the base, and are adapted to bear upon the pile of shades or other articles to be cut or trimmed, and also rested against a rule H, as a guide, the device when in operation being supported on said rule.
On the stock B is a handle J, and a boss K, the latter having the blade or cutterL passed through it and being provided with a set screw M, which is adapted to be tightened against said blade for holding the same in vertically adjusted position.
In the base A is a throat N, through which the point of the blade is adapted to protrude, so as to cut the articles below the same when the stock is lowered.
The operation is as follows: The base is placed on the rule H, and the stock depressed, whereby the blade and presser feet are lowered, said feet pressing against the pile of articles and being placed alongside of said rule. The handle J is grasped, and the device advanced, wherebythe blade cuts or trims the articles, while the feet ride on the edge of the rule, thus guiding the device true. When the cutting or trimming is efiected, the stock is let go whereby it rises, and the knife and feet return to their normal positions. It is not intended that the feet Gshall press severely on the pile of articles, if at all, as they are designedin the main to be guided on their sides on the rule, while their lower edges run freely on said pile, the main pressure on the pile being exerted by the rule on which the base A rests in the operation of the implement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A base having a throat, a stock, a knife secured to said stock and adapted to pass through said throat, springs interposed between said base and stock, boxes connected with said base and freely embracing said stock and screws which pass through vertical slots in the boxes into the stock, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a cutter or trimmer substantially as described, a base, a stock, and a spring interposed between said base and stock, in combination with a vertical pressure foot and guide which depends from the stock and freely passes through the base, substantially as described.
3. A cutter for the purpose named consisting of a base havinga throat therein, a stock in said base, springs in said base and on which said stock rests, a blade in said stock, guides and a handle for said stock, said parts being combined substantially as described.
MARTIN BRETHERTON.
