5 Be it known't-hat I, EBERHARD GRAF VON PFEIL,a subject of the Emperor of Germany,

residing in Hansdorf, Silesia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Desk Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to-provide a new and improved trunk or satchel which can be readily adjusted for use as a writing desk, part of it serving as a compartment for paper, envelopes, blotters, pens, &c.

The invention consists in the combination with a trunk or satchel, of a pocket formed on one side of the same, a strip on the side of said pocket along one edge, which strip has apertures and a bar hinged to the side of the trunk below said strip and having receptacles projectingfrom its edge,-which receptacles whenthe baris swung on edge can pass through the apertures in the strip, the strip being raised so that 'the side of the pocket forms a writin g support.

The invention also consists of the construction and combination of parts and details as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a trunk provided with my improved writing desk attachment, said attachment being adjusted for use. Fig. 2 is an end view of the upper part of the trunk with a writing-desk attachment, with the lat.- ter adjusted for use. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the desk attachment folded. Fig. 4 is a top view of the swinging end of the writ- Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bar for holding the top-plate of the attachment in raised position. Fig. 6 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on the line 7, 7, Fig. 6.

The trunk or satchel A is of the usual con struction and is provided at one side with a pocket B having folding ends, the outer side B of said pocket being formed of material of sufficient rigidity and stiffness to serve as a support for papers while writing on them. A

As shown in the drawings, the strip 0 is arranged slightlyat an angle to the side B edge as shown in Fig. 2, to hold the swinging end of the side B in raised position, or can be folded down on the side G of the trunk when the pocket B is closed.

To the under side of the strip 0 two cleats H are fastened which are provided with notches for receiving part of the bar F when the same is folded as shown in Fig. 3. A strap J is secured to the swinging edge of the bar F to permit of pulling the same from the folded position shown in Fig. 3 to the raised position shown in Fig. 2.

In a recess in the top edge of the bar F a receptacle K for receiving matches is fastened in such a manner that when said bar F is raised to the position on edge, said receptacle K passes through the slot 0 of the strip 0.

p A tight closing ink-well L of oblong shape is also fastened on the top edge of the bar F to project from said top edge and to pass through the slot 0' of the strip 0 when the bar F is swung on edge.

A recess or aperture M is provided in the upper edge of ,the bar F in such position that when the bar is raised, said aperture M will register with the apertureD in the strip 0.

To adjust the attachment for use as a writing-desk, all that is necessary is to grasp the strap J and pull the same outward whereby the bar F is swung on edge, the match-safe or receptacleK passing through the slot 0 and the ink-well L through the slot 0', whereby the bar F is locked in the position on edge. The swinging edgeof the side B of the pocket B is now raised and forms an inclined'writing support. A candle can be placedinto the apertures D, M, so as to furnish light when writing at night. The inkwell L is so constructed as to close absolutely liquid tight when not in use. After the writing has been done, the free end of the cover or side B is raised, so as to disengage the same from the match-box or receptacle K and ink-well L, and the bar F is swung down upon the side Got the trunk as shown in Fig. 3, and the side B of the pocket folded on the same. The pocket serves as a receptacle for writingpaper, blotters, pads, envelopes, pens, &c.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a trunk or satchel, of a pocket on one side of the same, a strip on the outer side of the pocket along the open edge, which strip has slots, and of a bar hinged to the side of the trunk below said open edge of the side of the pocket, and receptacles projecting from the edge of said bar and adapted to pass through the slots in the strip on the edge of the side of the pocket, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a trunk or satchel having a pocket on one side, of a strip se cured to the side of the pocket along the edge of the same, and provided with slots, a bar hinged to the side of the trunk below said strip, receptacles projecting from the edge of the bar, and notched cleats on the under side of the strip, substantially as set forth.

3. Thecoinbination,withatrunkorsatchel, of a pocket on one side of the same, of a strip secured to the side of the pocket along one edge, and provided with apertures, a bar hinged to the side of the trunk below said strip, receptacles projecting from the edge of said bar and adapted to pass through some of the apertures in the strip, said bar being provided in its edge with an aperture adapted to register with one of the apertures 1n the strip when said bar is raised, substantially as set forth.
