To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. J ARMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gorpus Ohristi,in the county of N uecesand State of Texas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to certain improvements in lanterns of that class in which a candle is used as a light-giving medium, and in which the chimney is tightly supported on the base of the lantern and around the candle, so that the light is fully protected against extinguishment by wind, and a cheap and convenient article is supplied.

The invention consists of alantern, the base of which is provided with a raised circular portion, at the center of which a' candle-socket is located. The chimney or globe is retained firmly on the raised center-portion of the base by means of a main-bail that is hinged to the base, and is extended above the crown of the chimney and provided below said crown with eyes, to which a handle-bail is pivoted. A loop-shaped retaining wire is attached to an eye on one side of the main-bail and adapted to be locked to a projecting catch or shoulder at the opposite side of the bail, said eye, shoulder,and retainingdevicebeingarranged somewhat below the level of the crown of the chimney so as to firmly bind on the same, and hold the chimney in position on the base.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved lantern. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the lower part or the base of the same drawn on a larger scale, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View on line 3-3 Fig. 1, showing the chimney or globe and the retaining device in plan-view.

Referring to the drawings, B represents the base of myimproved lantern which is preferably made of sheet-metal and provided with an outer annular flange b and a central raised portion 13' which is made annular and is concentric with the said flange. The raised portion 13 is of a shape corresponding to the size of the lower part of the chimney or globe C, so that the lower end of the chimney fits snugly around the raised portion B, and is retained in position by the same.

At the center of the raised portion B is located an opening I), and around the same is a tubular candle socket or holder b into which a candle is inserted. The opening b facilitates the raising of the stump of the can-- dle, when the same is burned into the socket, and also thecleaning of the candle-socket from any adhering tallow or paraffine. When the candle is in position in the socket the same is pressed downwardly and closes thereby the opening I), so as to prevent any draft of air from passing through the center opening to the inside of the chimney 0. At one side of the base is preferably located a finger loop a, whereby the lantern may be carried in the same manner as a lamp, if desired.

A main-bail A which is bent of wire of suitable thickness is pivoted to the base 13 at diametrically opposite points of the same and extended above the chimney, the bail being provided with eyes d preferably at some distance below the crown of the chimney, to which eyes a handle-bail H is pivoted by which the lantern is carried. The handlebail H is made of sufficient size to extend considerably above the end of the bail A, so that the hand does not come in contact with the same in carrying the lantern, and is not affected by the heat emitted from the chimney.

The main-bail A is provided at one side, slightly below the level of the crown of the chimney O, with an eye 6 and at the other side with an outwardly-projecting shoulder or catch e, said catch being beveled in upward direction as shown in Fig. 1. A loopshaped wire D is pivoted at one end to the eye e and its other end is providedwith a finger-piece. e and adapted'to be locked below the catch c. As the eye 6 and the catch e are slightly below the crown of the chimney O, and the loop-shaped retaining device is made of comparatively thin springy wire bent slightly, the latter binds on the crown and thereby retains the chimney firmly in position on the base, so that no air can pass into the interior of the chimney, at the point of connection of the same with the base. 7 When it is so desired to light the candle, the mainbail A is taken hold of, at opposite sides, by

the hand, and is compressed, whereby the loop-shaped retaining device D becomes released and flies upwardly so that the ehimney can be raised from the base. The candle is then lighted, the chimney replaced and the retaining device moved across the crown of the chimney until it is retained by the projecting shoulder e so that the chimney is again firmly locked in position on the base.

The upper rounded-01f end of the main-bail A serves for guiding the loop'shaped retaining device, the curvature of the upper end of the bail A being such that the loop D can readily pass over the same when releasing it from or applying it to the retaining catch c. It is clear without especial illustration that the device may be readily adapted for burning oil as well as candles, in which event a suitable oil-fount is supported on the raised central portion of the base.

My improved lantern has the following advantages:first, it can be manufactured cheaply, owing to the simplicity of its construction; second, the candle is inclosed so that it cannot be blown out even when subjected toa storm wind,the lantern being practically non-extinguishable; third, the mainbail being made of stout wire it imparts, in connection with the retaining-loop, a stable construction to the entire lantern and gives considerable strength to the same 5 and, fourth, the loop-shaped retainingdevice can be easily released so as to permit the lighting of the lantern and can be replaced with great facility, while the extinguishing of the lantern is accomplished by blowing downward circular center-portion, a main-bail pivoted to the base and adapted to extend above the chimney,a handle-bail applied to eyes of the main-bail, and a retaining device pivoted to one side of the main-bail and adapted to be locked at the opposite side of the same, so as to bind on the crown of the chimney and hold the same in position on the base, substantially as set forth.

2. A lantern, consisting of a base provided with a raised circular center-portion having a center opening and a candle-holder extending around said opening, a main-bail pivoted to the base and adapted to extend over the crown of the chimney, a handle-bail pivoted to the said main-bail, and a retaining-device formed of a loop-shaped wire pivoted to an eye at one side of the main-bail, said mainbail having at its opposite side a beveled catch or shoulder with which said retaining device is adapted to engage so as to extend over the crown of the globe and bind on the same, substantially as set forth.
