PATENT FRED W. TOBEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED DESK SUPPORT AND HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,462, dated May 29, 1 894.
Application filed November 13,1 893. Serial No. 490,857. (No model.)
ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved combined desk support and hinge, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features,.hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a desk, with my device attached, having one side broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device with portions of the desk to which it is attached; and Fig. 3 a detail of my device, in inverted side elevation.-
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the bottom, and A the end of the desk. 7
B is the front hinged to the bottom A by my device and when open supported in a horizontal position by the same.
0 is a strip of metal attached to the edge of the frontB and provided with alongitudinal slot D, near its middle, and a hinge joint H at its inner end, by which joint it is pivotally attached to a circular plate G, said plate being attached to the bed A. A barE is pivotally attached at its inner end to the inner surface of the end of the desk A and extends outward along the surface of the bottom A and in contact therewith, and is provided at its outer end with a stud F engaging and traversing the slot D. Said bar is bent downward opposite the hinge H, by the amount of its own width, whereby it is above the plane of the bottom A and front B at its inner end, and below the plane of the same at its outer end, thus saving any cutting away of said bottom; said bar thus near its middle also engages the upper side of the plate G and rests upon the same as a fulcrum when the desk is open, thus holding the plate down when any weight is on the front B and relieving the strain of the screws that secure the plate G in place. When the front is closed the bar E rises at its outerend turning on the pivot I at its inner end, and the stud F traverses the slot D, the various parts assuming the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be observed that this device does not extend back within the plane of the pigeon holes, &c., of the desk, thus obviating the need of extra heads, or ends to the same, also that it when open is low down and out of the way, all of which is of advantage, and due to the construction of the same.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with the bottom, end and front of a desk, of a plate, secured to said front, a rod, pivoted at its rear end to the end of the desk and having at its front end a sliding engagement with said plate, and a stationary plate secured to the bottom of the desk, said stationary plate having the inner end of the first mentioned plate pivotally connected with it and serving as a fulcrum for said rod when the desk-frontis open, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the bottom, end and front of a desk, of a slotted plate, secured to said front, a rod, pivoted at its rear end to the end of the desk and having at its front end a stud engaging and adapted to traverse said slot in the plate, and a plate secured to the bottom of the desk and having hinged to it the rear end of said slotted plate and serving as a support for the intermediate part of said rod when the front of the desk is open, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with a desk, a slotted plate attached to the front, a circular plate hinged to the end of said slotted plate and attached to the desk bottom, a bar pivoted at its inner end to the desk end, and resting upon said circular plate when the desk is open, and having a downward bend opposite said hinge, and a stud in the outer end of said bar engaging and traversing said slot, substantially as described.
4. A combined desk support and hinge,
consisting of a slotted plate, designed to be secured to the front of the desk, a rod, designed to be pivoted at its rear end to the end of the desk and having at its front end a stud engaging and traversing the slot in said plate, and a plate, designed to be secured to the bottom of the desk, to which the rear end of said slotted plate is hinged and which is engaged
