CUTTER .oR TRl MM E -Ri Foe-wood, LEATHER, 860.
' srncrrrca'rion aimi g rt-i of Letters ratent naeemeo i, dated can... 16, 1694. mutant shimm 8,-1894. s en no. 496,067. (no man .Jo alZ, whom/it may concern.-
' Be it kno wn'that I, JOHN A. HESs,a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Cutters or Trimniers forWood,'&c.,-- which improvement 'isfully setforth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
- My inv ntion consists of a cntter or trim-1 ntier for w od. &c., formed of "aknife or'blade' to which rotary'and traversing motionsmay be imparted by means substantially as herein after set forth and pointedontintheclainis';
It also consists o f-me'aps for adjusting the knife onblade'and setting'it true in position.
It further consists in providing the device. with a-ga-ge which may be adjusted in longi-' tudinal and transverse, positions, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a cutter or trimmer embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a top'for plan viewther'of.
' Fig. 3 represents a front viewthereof.
- Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the several figures.
,Beferring to the drawings: A designates a bed orbase, from the front side of which rises the horizontally arranged rack B, with which meshes the pinion -C, whose arbogor shaft D' passes freely througha traveler E, which is guided atbottom inthe' recess F in the bed .A, and at top in the recess 'G- in the bar H,
which latter is supported on the standards J which are connected with said bed, it being noticed thatv the traveleris somewhat of conica'l form, and its top is-provided with a-tongue K, shown partlyiin'full and :partlyin dotted p igrasped, and with'it the limb V, the dog is go lines Fig. 3, the same freely entering the recess G, so as to prevent-rotation of: the-traveler while readily permitting the same. tomove tothe right and left, andvice-v'ersa, in the=recesses F and 'G.- v The -'r"e-a r' face of the traveler is recessed and occupied by the head L, to which the circular blade or cutter M isscrewed or-otherwise-connected, said head and cutter being fitted on the inner end of the arbor D, and
. .secured thereto by means-of the screw N,
which passes through the washer P intosaid bor D.
' Y, the latter passing through transverse slots "the head E and tighten against the back of the hea'dL, said screws N andQ also serving to adjust and set the cutter N true on the ar:
Secured to the front end of the arbor, '15 a toothed wheel R with which isadapted to engage the'dog or pawl S, which ishung on the crank arrn T, the latter being freely mounted xonthe arbor D, and having at its upper end 6 the-handle U, below which isthe limb V of j the dog S, so that said limb. and'handle may be grasped, whereb'ythedog may be engaged with thewheel R, and the armT tnrned to theright and, left, thus rotating said wheel and consequently the pinionO, whereby the latter rides over the rack B, and the cutter is rotated and caused to. traverse the bed A.
interposedbetween the handle U and limb vis'wspringWfor raising the dog S and clearing it of the wheel R.- In the bed is a longitudinally-extending groove X, whichreceives the heads-of bolts Z in the plates A, which rest on the bed and are formed with or attached to gages B which rise from. the bed and servie tojform. abutrnents for the material-to be' cut or trimmed while resting on the bed A, as shown ends of' the'bolts are nuts D, for tightening the plates on the bed, it being evident that the gagesBi may be adjusted in longitudinal directions, owing to the slots Z and groove X. Theheads of the bolts and the walls of 8 the groove-X are of dovetailed form, so that saidheads are prevented from vertical displacementi I It will be seen that when the handle U is lowered,'w.hereby the armT is coilpled with the wheel R. .The arm maynow beswu ng to the right or left, and as the 'pinion'rides on the rack, the traveler is carried with it, as is r at O'indotted lines Fig. 2. On the upper V also the cutter, the latter '1ikewise rotating' 5 and being directed against the article to be cutpr trimmed, the elfect of which is evident. After the cutter has made a 'partialrotation, the'dog is let go, and the arm turned back, and the dog again lowered, so as to take a 1 fresh hold of the wheel R, and thus the Gilli-2' ter maybe made to'traverse theentirelength of the bed in either direction of the same, so as to be operative to right or left as desired, or required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cutter or trimmer for the purpose named, consisting of a. base having on its front a rack, a bar connected with standards on said base, a traveler horizontally movable and guided in recesses in said base and bar, a rotary shaft mounted in said traveler, and carrying a pinion meshing with said rack, an adjustable head secured "on said shaft within a recess in said traveler, a cutter secured to said head, said parts being combined substantially' as described.
2. A cutter or trimmer for the purpose named, consisting of a base, a horizontal rack secured" to the front of said base, a bar secured by standards to said base, a traveler having a tongue in a recess in said bar, a shaft mounted in said traveler and having a pinion thereon meshing with said rack, a head on said shaft within a recess in said traveler, a securing screw and washer for said head, adjusting screws in said travelerfor said head,
and'a handle loosely mounted on the shaft and having a spring-controlled pawl adapted to engage a ratchet wheel on said shaft, said parts being combined substantial-1y as described.
3. A cutter for the purpose named, consisting of a base with a rack, a traveler guided on said base, a shaft mounted in said traveler and-carrying a pinion meshing with'said rack, an adjustable head with a cutter connected with said shaft, a gage adj ustably secured to said base, anda handle with spring pawl engaging a gear wheel on said shaft, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4:. Acutter for the purpose named, consisting of the bed A having thereon the horizontal rack B, and formed with the recess F, the standardsJ on said bed, the. cross bar H connecting said standards, having the recess G therein, the sliding traveler E guided in said recesses G and F, a shaft mounted in said travelema pinion C mounted on said shaft and meshing with said rack, the head L connectedwith said shaft within the recessed rear face of said traveler, and a blade connected with said head, said parts being combined substantialiyas described,
