UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BRUST, DAVID FREDRICK REINHARD, AND LOUIS `PETER DUNKEL, OF MOUNT CARMEL, ILLINOIS.
LOCK;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,105, dated October 9,1894. f Application filed February 20, 1894:. Serial N0. 600,926. (No model.) d
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known 'that we, GEORGE BRUST, DA- VID FEEDRICK REINHARD, and LOUIS PETER DUNKEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks;`
and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
The special object 0f the invention is to make a lock in which the latch and fastening bolt are operated without a spring and securely held at night so hat neither can be forced back into the lock-case by any key from the outside.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the lock with the outer plate removed; Fig. 2, a detail perspective of the detent which holds both lock and latch, and Fig. 3, a similar View of the lock-bolt.
In the drawings,Arepresents the lock-case and B the knob'spindle with the opposite flanges b b to throw back the latch C. The latter has, at its rear end, the branches c c with lugs at right angles thereto and against these lugs c bear the spindle-flanges b in order to draw the latch head C within the case A. On the under side of the latch O is a notch c2 in which Works an end cl of the lever D, the rear end of this lever being cam.
shaped and operated by the point e of a lever E which is actuated by a Weight e on the opposite end, so as to throw the latch out of the case.
F is the lock bolt which is longitudinally slotted at fso as to slide on the case-studl a which is also the fulcrum of the end-weighted lever G having at one side, the stud g which engages the notches ff on the under side of the bolt F. The key engages a notch f2 to throwback or forward the bolt but first lifts the weighted end of lever Gso as to disengage the Studgfrom anotch f. By means latch or lock-bolt from being retracted by a key or other unlocking instrument, for security at night against thieves and burglars. This is clearly shown in Fig'. l of the drawings, Where the lower end h is over the lever G so that it cannot be raised while a projec- 6o tion h2 bears against the rear-end of the latch C. -This detent is operated byan arm I, pivoted at h thereto and provided, at the other end, with a linger-pin J. The latter works at its lower end in two communicating slots a2 as of the case, the said slots being at an angle to one another. When the pin J is in the slot a2, the detent is thrown back against the side of the case, but when in thev slot a3,
the said detent stands obliquely as shown in 7o Fig. l of the drawings.
By operating the detent as We do,our in vention may be used as a mortise lock which is quite a desideratum.
Having thus described all that is necessary toa full understanding of our invention, what we claim asfnew, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is`
1. The combination with a subjacently notched latch O, of a cam-lever D having 8o one end that works in said notch and an endweighted lever having a point which travels over said cam of the lever D, to operate it in the manner described.
2l The detent H having at upper end a slot 85 to receiveastud on case, in combination with' the arm I pivoted thereto and having a handle pin J which traverses an angle-groove in case as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures 9o in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE BRUSI. DAVID FREDRIOK REINHARD. LOUIS PETER DUNKEII.
