SASH FASTENBR.
' No. 513,418. l I Patented Jan. 23, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
CARLv HERMANN RICHTER, OF BCIZENBURG, GERMANY.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,418, dated January 23, 1894. Application tiled November 14, 1892. Serial No. 451.873. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, CARL HERMANN RICH- TER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, residing at Boizenburg, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in the German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Sliding- Sash Windows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object, to provide a means of retaining sliding sash windows at any height to which it is desired that the window should be opened, and of releasing such windows when it is desired to. open them to their fullest extent, and it is particularly applicable to thewindows of railway, tramway and other carriages, ships saloons, and the like.
The invention consists of a spring-pressed bolt arranged in the frame or casing in which the sash slides, which bolt is provided with a beveled lateral projection that can pass into recesses in the. sash frame.
In the drawings hereto annexed', Figure l illustrates my invention applied to the window of a railway carriage door. Fig. 2 shows the door and windowin vertical section. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the locking bolt, drawn to a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
The sash A slides in the stile C of the door frame or cascment in the usual manner,`the sash A being provided in one or both ofv its side members with recesses or notches e ar-` ranged one above the other, and into these notches the projection s of the spring locking bolt d catches. The locking bar d projects upon both faces of the carriage door or case ment, and is thus capable of being operated from either side, namely, by apulling action upon one side and pushing action upon the other. A helical spring h serves to keep the projection s of the locking bolt engaged with the recesses e of the window-frame. A` handle g is provided upon the sash B, by which it may be raised and lowered.
In operation, the sash is raised to any desired height bythe handle g. The projections of the locking bolt cl is then allowed to engage with a notch or recess e, and is kept engaged therewith by the action of the spring h. When it is desired to release the sash, the spring bolt d is pressed upon from the outside, or pulled from the inside of the door. This action withdraws the projection s from the recess e with which it has been engaged, and the sash is free to descend. Upon raising the sash, the projection s will engage with each succeeding recess e, and the sash may be retained thereby at any desired height.
By the use of this invention, the opening and closing of the sash may be effected from outside or inside the apartment with equal facility, thereby providing for this being done by railway servants and others without the necessity of intruding inside the apartment, and the sash may be released by persons sitting next it,in case of a railway carriage and the like, without their rising from their seats.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash-holder, the combination with a sliding bolt mounted transversely in a window-casing and projecting from both faces of the same, which bolt is provided at each end with a handle piece rigidly connected therewith, a spring acting'on said bolt,a lateral projection on the bolt, and a sash provided with a series of notchesin which the said projection on the bolt can pass, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
CARL HERMANN RICHTER.
Witnesses:
I-IEINE. PoHLs, PAUL HIRsCH.
