SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,973, dated January 16, 1894. Application filed May 1, 1393. Serial No. 472,483.v (No model.)

Be it known that I, HENRY B. A. KEIsER, of
Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Ejccting Core-Barrels and for other Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and effective device, operated by fluid-pressure, for doing the work of a hydraulic press or punch, and especially for ejecting ingots or core-barrels from the molds.
, Itis as an ejecting device that Ihave especially devised it, and I shall describe it particularly as employed for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine shown in connection with a mold'from which it is adapted to eject an ingot. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the machine.

In thedrawings, 2 represents a hydraulic cylinder having a piston-rod or plunger 3, which projects from the end of the cylinder as shown.
4, 5, are fluid-inlets which enter the opposite ends of the cylinder, leading from a valve 6 controlled by a lever 7, and constructed in the usual manner, so as to be capable of putting either of the inlets into communication with a supply-pipe 8 leading from a pump 9, or with a return exhaust-pipe 10 leading to a waterreservoir 11. The pump preferably comprises one or more cylinders 12, having a reciprocating piston or plunger 13, actuated by a crank-shaft 18, and having ports and 16 controlled by valves and communicating,
respectively, with a supply-passage 17 which leads from the reservoir 11, and with an eduction-pipe 8 which leads to the valve 6. As the plunger 13 is projected, it forces the water contained in the cylinder 2 through the port 16 to the valve 6, and as it is retracted, the valve of the port 16 is closed and water is sucked into the cylinder through the port 15. In the drawings I show three of these pump cylinders and plungers, all operated from a common crank-shaft 18, but more or less of them may be employed, or the construction of the pump mechanism may be modified as will be understood by the skilled mechanic. The crank-shaft 18 is connected by pitmen 19 withthe several plungers, and is rotated by means of an electric motor 20, whose rapidly rotating armature is connected by gearing 21,
22, with the crank-shaft, the gearing and motor being supported by the frame of the cylinder 2 so as to form with it a single portable 6;: structure.
23 is a casting from which it is desired to eject a core-barrel 24. For this purpose, the cylinder is connected with the casting 'by means of links 25 pivoted to the cylinderframe and fitted to lugs 26 on the casting.
In order to operate the apparatus, the valvelever 7 is moved so as to connect the inlet port 4. of the cylinder with the supply-pipe 8, and the port 5 with the return-pipe 10., Then the motor 20 having been set in operation, water is pumped into the cylinder through the port 4 and projects the piston, which engaging the core-barrel 24., ejects the same from the casting. manner for ejecting an ingot from its mold, the cylinder being connected with the mold by the links 25, so that the force applied by the plunger is self-contained within the apparatus itself. When the apparatus is to be used for forging, punching, pressing, or any other similar purpose, the plunger is provided with a suitable operating tool, and the anvil or bed-plate is connected to the cylinder by suitable means. The whole forms a single portable apparatus which may be carried from place to place in the mill according to the location of the molds or castings, and may be suspended from a crane by hangers 27, 27, or supported in any other suitable manner.
With reference to the construction of the apparatus for ejecting ingots or core-barrels, I believe I am the first to employ a portable apparatus comprising a pusher for acting on the ingot or core-barrel, an electric motor, 5 means for connecting the mold or casting with the apparatus, and intermediate mechanism adapted to transmit power from the motor to the pusher, reducing the speed thereof, whether said transmitting mechanism conroo sist of gearing, pump and cylinder, as illustrated in the drawings,or of any other trans- The apparatus is used in like 75 mitting mechanism, whether hydraulic, pneumatic,-or purely mechanical. I therefore intend to claim the same broadly.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.

Within the scope of my invention as defined in the following claims, various modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made, since What I claim is 1. A machine of the character described, comprising in combination a hydraulic actuating cylinder, a pump for supplying motive I fluid thereto, and an electric motor operating said pump, all being combined in a single portable structure; substantially as described.
2. Apparatus for ejecting ingots and corebarrels, comprising in a single portable structure adapted to be hung upon acrane a cylinder and pusher-plunger for the core-barrel or ingot, links for connecting the mold or casting therewith, a pump adapted to supply motive fluid to the cylinder, and an electric motor operating the pump; substantially as described.
3. Apparatus for ejecting ingots and corebarrels, comprising in a single portable structure hung upon a crane a pusher for the corebarrel or ingot, an electric motor, intermediate power-transmitting mechanism adapted to transmit the power from the motor to the pusher and to lessen the speed thereof, and means for connecting a mold or casting with the apparatus; substantially as described.
