Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. W. HOLLY, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED CLAMP FOR COVERING ROLLERS WITH CLOTH OR CANVAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,182, dated November 28, 1865; antedated November 18, '1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, H. W. HOLLY, of Norwich7 in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Device for Covering Rollers with Cloth or Canvas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the upper part of the same, taken in the line x a', Fig. l Fig. 3, a detached horizontal sect-ion of a clamp pertaining to the same, taken in the line y y, Eig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding pai ts.
This invention relates to a new and useful means for covering rollers with canvas or cloth, and is more especially designed for covering cork rollers for clothes-\vringing machines, although it may be advantageously used for covering rollers designed for other purposes.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a clamp placed in a suitable framing and arranged as hereinafter set forth, whereby the work may be done in a very expeditious and perfect manner.
A represents a framing constructed of two parallel side pieces, a a, having a horizontal plate, b, secured to their upper ends, and a horizontal plate, e, secured between them.
B is a clamp composed of three upright plates C, C C, having conca-ve inner surfaces, which form a circle when the hinged plates are adjusted in contact at their outer ends. plate C is iixed or stationary, and the plates C C' hinged to C, one at each side of it, as shown at d. The outer edges ofthe hinged plates C C have each a rod, D, attached to them, and these rods pass through oblon g slots e e in one of the side pieces, a, of the framing.
The inner concave surfaces ofthe plates C C C are covered with indiarubber, E, or other Thesuitable material, which will have a tendency to hold the cloth or prevent the same from slipping in the clamp.
A circular hole,f, is made in the center of the top plate, b, in line with the interior of the clamp B, and a similar hole is made in the plate c.
The device is used as follows The cloth cover F for the roller Gr is made or sewed up in tubular form, and of such diameter that it will t tightly on the roller G. One end of thelatter isslightly tapered, so that it may be inserted a short distance in one end of the cloth tube or cover F, and the two parts C C ofthe clamp B are opened or spread apart to admit of the cover F being passed down through them, and the end of the roller to pass a tritle into the upper end of the clamp, so that when the parts C C of the clamp are pressed toward each other by the operator actuating the rods D D the clamp will grasp the covered end of the roller. The latter is then passed down through the clamp andthe cloth cover doubled or turned overon theroller, a result due to the fact that there is more adhesion between the rubber lining E of the clamp and the cloth cover, and also between the roller G and the cloth cover, than there is between the doubled parts of the coverwhich arein contact. Hence thc roller may be readily forced down through the clalnp and the cover doubled over uponit.
By this means I am enabled to adjust the cover very tightly on the roller, lnore so than by any other mode, and the work may be rapidly performed.
l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t The covering of rollers with cloth, canvas, or other material by doubling the latter over the former in a clamp, in the manner substantially as set forth.
E. w. HOLLY.
