Description
GEORGE WV. MALLORY,
OF GUILDS, CANADA.
GATE- LATC H SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,181, dated December 5, 1893.
Application t at September 19, 1893. stain No. 485,775. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MALLORY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Guilds, in the county of Kent, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a gate latch designed to latchthe gate when closed from either side and at the same time to permit of opening it on either side.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction ofthe parts whereby the device is simplified and its cost cheapened, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved latch. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same detached. Fig.3 is a rear perspective view of the plate.
A is the securing and supporting plate for the latch and this plate is provided on its rear face with a semi-cylindrical bearing B at each end and centrally with the semi-cylindrical spring socket C. At each side of this central socket and beside the bearing B are the lugs D cast integral with the plate and of such material that they can be bent over the shaft E of the latch to hold the same against accidental displacement. This shaft fits in the bearings B and is provided centrally with a pin F to which one end of the spring G'is secured; the other end of this spring is formed with the arm H entering a socket I in the plate as plainly shown in Fig. 2. At each end the plate is provided with the lips J,'which serve as stops for the horizontal locking arms K of the 1atch,these arms being integral with the shaft E and extending forward of the :plate from said shaft, as shown in Fig. 1.
The arms at their outer ends are provided with the rearwardlyand upwardly curved actuatin g wings L, the parts thus constructed being attached to a gate post in the path of the.
arms K, the tension of the spring will throw the latch down to the position shown in Fig. 1, in whichposition the opposite side of the gate post will strike the arm K and hold it closed. To open it the operator'simply raises the outer end of the wing L and pushes the gate past the latch.
It is evident that the latch may be operated from either side and that a gate closed from either side will raise the latch and be locked in the manner set forth.
What I claim as my invention is In a gate latch the combination of the plate A having the bearing B and the central spring socket O and lugs D beside the bearing, of the shaft E over which said lugs are turned, the spring G secured at one end to the shaft and at theptherend engaging the plate and the arms K, and wings L having the inclined bearings L, the parts arranged and operated substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE W. MALLORY.
