IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-JACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,993, dated January 9, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOS. L. BROWN, of

Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Jack or Last- Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to the class of devices intended to hold a last in convenient position for stitching or pegging the work, and is designed so as to enable the last to be both readily placed and rmly held in any position that may be required.

A is a circular base having a hollow stem, B, intended to occupy a circular hole, c, in a bench, C, in which bench the said base rests.

Inclosing and revolving upon the base A is acircular foot, D, from which rises vertically a lug, E, to which is secured, by bolt F and nut Gr, a similar lug depending perpendicnlarly from the upper circular base, H, which is inclosed by an upper circular foot, I. The head of the bolt F is eyeleted, and the bases A and H and feet D and I are perforated axially to receive a cord, thong, chain, or strap, J, whose lower end is attached to acentral rod, K, having a nut, L, which bears against a spiral spring', M, which incloses the stem B, and whose upper end presses against the under side of the base A. The part J may have a swivel-joint to prevent twisting. The upper extremity ot the thong J is attached to a bell-crank, N, hinged onto the upper foot, I', and having its upper limb, N', terminated by a pin, n', intended to enter a corresponding perforation in the last P.

Q is an adjustable rest for the tip of the last, the said rest having a slotted foot, q, and being secured to the foot I by means ot' bolt R and nut S, the slot in the foot g permitting the rest to be set to a greater or less distance from the center of the circular foot I,

according to the size of last designed to be employed.

The bolt F has an eye,f, through which the strap or thong J is drawn. The last being set either level, as in Fig. .2, or to any desired canted position, as in Fig. 1, can be firmly secured thereto by tightening of the nut, and may then be rotated either in the plane of the upper or of the lower base, so as, besides being turned to the right or to the left about the bolt, to present the work at any position whatever that may be desired, by the use of any one ot' three distinct motions or by a combination ot' any two or all three of them, all without changing or in the least affecting the tension of the thong J, which thong, in connection with the adjusting-nut, serves to hold the last down iirmly upon the rest with force sufficient for work, but not such as to prevent the ready removal of the last at any moment without any special manipulation ofthe rest or change ot' tension ot' the spring. The thong and spring, in addition to the above oiiice, serve Vto hold the several bases A andB and feet D and Itirmly to each other, while permitting a free rotation about their respective axes in any and every position.

The upper having been properly stretched over the last, the workman can welt, sole, and nish the shoe complete without removing it once from the jack.

I claim herein as new and of my invention- A last-holder provided with two sets of rotary shifting-plates, A D H I, connected by a tightening-bolt, F, parallel to both, and eyeleted to receive an adjustable tens'ional cord or thong, J, or devices substantially equivalent, connecting and operating substantially asset forth.
