JULIUS FREIHERR VON HUNEPELD. KEY ATTACHMENT FOR LOOKS.
No. 519,605. Patented May 8, 1894.
71 iinasfiea I 70/04/10:", M Jalzwfl'eierr wnfbyelfl a COMPANY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
KEY ATTACHMENT FOR LOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,605, dated May 8, 1894. Application filed september 16,1893- Serial No.485,7 18. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS FREIHERR voN HUNEFELD, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at 44 Pragerstrasse, Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful IInprovements in Key Attachments for Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for operating a look from any partof a room, as for example, from a bed, or from a reading chair, or hammock, ata distance from the door of the apartment.
It is the purpose of said invention to provide a simple device which shall be capable of ready application to and removal from any kind or size'of key, whereby the latter may be turned, either to retract, or to shoot the bolt, by a person at any point within the apartment to which the door gives access.
The invention consists in the novel parts and features of construction and in the new combinations of such parts, hereinafter fully set forth and then particularly pointed out in the claim which concludes this specification.
To enable others to fully understand and to make, construct, and use my said invention I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1, is a side elevation, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2, is a front elevation, partly in section, showing the same parts. Fig. 3, is a front elevation showing the device clamped upon a key. Fig. 4, is a broken front view indicating a lock with the device clamped upon a key in the lock and showing the means for operating the device in either direction, so'that the lock can be locked or unlocked in either direction.
The reference numeral l,in said drawings, indicates the shank and one jaw of the clamping device which may be formed of wood, metal, or other suitable material. .The jaw of the part 1, is suitably broadened and is only half the thickness of the shank, or thereabout, to provide a seat for a second jaw 2, of substantially similar form. Through the latter jaw, which is wholly detachable, is loosely passed the threaded portion 3, of a screw having a thumb-piece 4, said screw being tapped through the jaw on the part 1. In the other extremity of the shank is mounted a loop, or eye 5, to which a cord, chain, or wire 6, is connected in any suitable manner, said cord being extended in two directions upon opposite sides ofthe shank and led through, or over, any suitable form of guides 7, as in Fig. 4 secured to, or in, the walls of the room, upon opposite sides of the shank, and its endsare then brought together and "joined, sufficient slack being allowed to bring the'lower portion of said cord within convenient reach of the occupant of the room. The two parts or jaws of the clamp are placed upon opposite sides of the ring of the key and the screw 3 is inserted through both jaws and passed through the ring and screwed up until the jaws are tightly compressed upon the key. By drawing the cord 6, in one direction, or the other, the key will be correspondingly turned in the lock to shoot or retract the bolt according to the direction in which the shank 1 is swung, thereby enabling the occupant of the apartment to open the door and admit a .caller without rising, or removing from the point where he might be sitting or lying.
What I claim is- A key attachment for turning a lock-key in either direction, consisting of a shank having at one end a jaw and at the opposite end means to connect with a cord, a movable jaw arranged in relation to the jaw on the shank to clamp the ring end of the key, and a thumb screw passing through the two jaws for clamping them together, said shank by its swinging movement serving to turn the key in either direction, substantially as described In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
