Description

UNITED STATES HORACE HAYWARD,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF FITCHBURG, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS H. DODGE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,943, dated January 9, 1866.
To alL whom it may concern.'
Be it'known that L11/ORAGE HAYWARD, of Fitchburg, in the county otl Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode ot' Cutting the Uppers for Balmoral Boots and l do hereby declare that the followiu g is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view ot' a piece of leather cut after my invention to form one side ot' a leg and the top and sides of the foot of a balmoral boot. Fig. 2 represents the piece of leather necessary to complete theleg of the boot. Fig. 3 represents the pieces shown in Figs. 1 and 2 stitched together; and Fig. 4 represents, upon areduced scale, a rear perspective view of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 when stitched as seen at b, and closed in rear at c, and provided with eyelets and lacing in front.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, represents the part which forms one half of the upper for the boot, B the other half, and C the part which forms one half of the leg, the other half of the leg being formed by the extra piece D, Fig. 2.
lt will be seen that the line of cut a is in the proper position and of the desired curvature for the opening in the front of the boot which is t0 be laced up, the edges d d, from 1 to 2, being laced together, while the edge e ot' the part C is laced with the edge f of the part D, and the edge g of C is closed with the edge h ot' piece D, except the lower part, fz', which is closed with the edge j of the part B. The edges m and u form the bottom of the upper when soled.
By the above mode of cutting the uppers of high-top balmoral boots a very large per cent. of leather is saved, while all seams over the foot are avoided. The boot can be made according to my invention much cheaper, so far as relates to the mere labor of making, while the boot is much better when completed. lt its the foot much better, there being no seams across the top to press into the foot. The stock taken up in the lap-seams over the foot, as heretofore made, is saved.
The amount of stock saved by my invention will be fully illustra-ted by cutting up two sides of leather into high-top bahnoral boots, one side by my plan and the other by the old mode. The amount saved by my invention will surprise the most expert cutters, while another large saving in labor is effected iu titting the uppers.
On very thick leather the rear part ot the piece D might be cut so as to extend down to the sole of the boot, in which case the corner o of the partB would be left oft' in cutting the upper.
Haviu g described my improved mode ot' cutting the uppers of high-top balmoral boots, what I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Cutting the parts A, B, and C, which form the top and sides of the Jfoot and one side of the leg of a high-top balmoral boot, substantially as shown and described.
2. Cutting the part D to form one side ot' the leg of a high-top balmoral boot, substantially as shown in Fig. 2 ot the accompanying drawings.
HORACE HAYVVARD.
itnesses z H. L. FULLER, THos. H. DODGE.
