, UNITED STATES ll ATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CORSCADEN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
MAN U FACTU RE OF STRAP -HING ES.
$PEGIFIOA'1ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,243, dated May 1, 1894.
Application filed September 27, 1893- Serial No. 486,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS CQRSCADEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Strap-Hinges, of which the following is a speci- My invention relates to improvements in the manufactureof strap hinges, and the object of my improvement is to make a symmetrical hinge without any waste of stock.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of one of my hinge blanks together with portions of other blanks, the same illustrating the method of cutting said blanks from a bar or. plate of metal. Fig. 2 represents in plan View one of the blanks shown in Fig. 1 as having been subjected to the second step in my process.
In my prior patent, No. 47 6,521, dated June 7, 1892, I described and claimed the same method of cutting the first blanks from a bar of metal, but I utilized those blanks in the form in which they were thus cut. I
In my present improvement, I first cut the blanks as described in said patent and shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, and 'then I bend these blanks edgewise tothrow them from the form of blank shown at A in In cutting the first blanks A, Fig. 1, I take a bar or plate of metal wide enough for cut ting two rows of blanks and cut them on the dividing lines shown, so that the widest part of one blank is cut from the narrower part of the adjacent blank with the longest line of division between them extending obliquely ,to the length of the bar of metal, while the op posite edges of these blanks are left straight and are formed by the original edge of the bar or plate of metal. Itwill thus be seen that there is no waste of stock in cutting the blanks A. Bending or swaging these blanks edgewise from the form shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 makes a symmetrical blank of proper form for making a pair of hinge leaves for a strap hinge of the ordinary lozenge shape.
This second operation is inexpensive and can readily be performed in suitable dies when the metal is cold.
i I claim as my invention The herein described method of manufacturing strap hinges which consists in cutting blanks for. a pair of hinge leaves with each tapering leaf blank having one straight edge and one oblique edge as shown, then swaging said blanks edgewise throughout their tapering portion into a symmetrical shape with two oblique edges, and subsequently forming hinges from said blanks, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
THOS. CORSCADEN.
